From Above
Ben Folds;Nick Hornby Lyrics

They even looked at each other once across the crowded bar
He was with Martha, she was with Tom
Neither of them really knew what was going on
A strange feeling of never, heartbeats becoming synchronized

It's been that way forever but most of the time it's just near misses
Or kisses once at a bookstore, once at a party
She came in as he was leaving and years ago at the movies
She sat behind him, the 6:30 showing of "While You Were Sleeping"
He never once looked around

It's so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk past them every day

And it's not like they were ever
Actually unhappy in the lives they lived
He married Martha, she married Tom
Just this faint notion that something was wrong
An ache, an absence, a phantom limb

An itch that could never be scratched

It's so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk past them every day

Neither of them knew what was going on
A strange feeling of never,
Heartbeats becoming synchronized

Stay that way forever

Who knows whether that's how it should be
Maybe a ghost lived in that vacancy

Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we are the unlucky ones

It's so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates
But we walk past them every day

Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we are the unlucky ones
Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we are the unlucky ones

Lyrics

They even looked at each other once across a crowded bar
He was with Martha, she was with Tom
Neither of them really knew what was going on
Strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
and staying that way forever

Most of the time it was just near misses
Air kisses, once at a bookstore, once at a party
She came in as he was leaving
And years ago at the movies, she sat behind him
A 6:30 showing of 'While You Were Sleeping'
He never once looked around

[Chorus:]
It's so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk past them every day, oh no

And it's not like they were ever actually unhappy in the lives they lived
He married Martha, she married Tom
Just this vague notion that something was wrong
A naked absence, a phantom limb
An itch that could never be scratched

[Chorus]

Neither of them knew what was going on
A strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
And staying that way forever

Who knows whether that's how it should be
Maybe our ghosts live in that vacancy

Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones

[Chorus]

Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones [x2]

These two should work together on an album I love Ben Folds' voice, he makes it look so easy and yet his notes are always right on point

Joan Moriarity

I love this song. I interpret it as an angry condemnation of the very idea of "soul mates". It tells us that if we accept the concept of soul mates, then we also have to accept that they won't always meet each other, with all the bitter consequences of these beautiful lyrics.
I refuse to believe in the concept, for the same reason I refuse to believe in Hell. It's too cruel to be real. And if I ever discovered proof that it is real, I would do everything in my power to erase the memory, because it would be too painful to go on living in a universe designed for the express purpose of torturing its inhabitants.

Fantastic, just amazing. Ben Folds and Nick Hornby need to make another album together. The lyrics are so relatable and truthful and I can't even start talking about the amazing composition.

Beautiful lyrics, beautiful concept.

@minivanmonkey It absolutely does not

While it is true that Owe is the lyric, it works so much better as Are.

ModestMice

Maybe we "owe" the unlucky ones

I know compared to other sophisticated comments my comment won't seem very interesting at all but I only have to say, I love this song and the sound of it matching the story, it's just fantastic.

Harry Nilsson Catalogue

I agree.
