Walk Away
Ben Harper and The Innocent Crim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh no
Here comes that sun again
That means another day
Without you my friend

And it hurts me
To look into the mirror at myself
And it hurts even more
To have to be with somebody else
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away

With so many people
To love in my life
Why do I worry
About one

But you put the "happy"
In my "ness"
You put the good times
Into my fun
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away
And head for the door

We've tried the goodbye
So many days
We walk in the same direction
So that we could never stray
They say if you love somebody
Than you have got to set them free
But I would rather be locked to you
Than live in this pain and misery

They say time will
Make all this go away
But it's time that has taken my tomorrows
And turned them into yesterdays
And once again that rising sun is droppin' on down
And once again you my friend are nowhere to be found
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away
And head for the door
You just walk away
Walk away

Walk away
Just walk on, walk on, turn and head for the door, just walk away.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ben Harper's song Walk Away express the pain of a man who has lost a friend or a lover, but who knows that he has to let go and move on with his life. The first verse sets the emotional tone of the song with the sun rising and starting the day without the person in question "That means another day/Without you my friend/And it hurts me/To look into the mirror at myself/And it hurts even more/To have to be with somebody else". He is hurting, both for the loss of his friend and for the fact that he must deal with his own emotions and move on, even if it means leaving someone else behind.

In the second verse, he questions why he should worry so much about one person when there are so many people to love in his life. But he also acknowledges that this particular person made him happy and brought joy to his life ("But you put the 'happy'/In my 'ness'/You put the good times/Into my fun"). The chorus repeats the message that sometimes walking away is necessary, even when it is hard to do.

The bridge of the song speaks of the difficulty of saying goodbye and the struggle to let go, but also the pain of holding on when it is time to move on ("But I would rather be locked to you/Than live in this pain and misery"). The final verse speaks to the passage of time and how it has turned his tomorrows into yesterdays, and how once again, his friend is nowhere to be found as the sun sets.

Overall, the song Walk Away is a poignant statement about the difficulty of letting go of a relationship that has ended, but that must be left behind in order to move on with life.
