Unlike most artists of his ilk, Khan’s primary instrument is guitar, and he claims listening to “mostly old-school” artists like B.B. King, Fleetwood Mac, and, Nirvana helped him develop his bluesy chops. He then turned to hip-hop (Earl Sweatshirt, Pusha T, and Danny Brown are current favorites), making beats on an MPC after hearing J Dilla, and putting them online. (“I had a couple of friends rap on those beats," he says, “but if Wu-Tang Clan were there, they would've absolutely killed it.”)

Ben Khan Lyrics

On your way from the temple
It's a knot in my neck
Does this speed up your girlfriend?
Staying up late to go numb
Can you feel your face? Are you done?
Come lie with me, come on
Still can't tell if you love me
Are we gonna break the spell?
Still can't tell if you don't speak
Are we gonna break away?
We flew over our city
In the area we used to play
They carry us through
Crash landed in a playground
Now we are the
About to fall in love
Still can't tell if you love me
Are we gonna break the spell?
Still can't tell if you don't speak
Are we gonna break away?
The lyrics to Ben Khan's song "Ruby" delve into themes of love, uncertainty, and escapism. The song starts off with the line, "You gave me a ruby on your way from the temple," which seems to suggest that the song's protagonist was gifted a precious gem by their romantic partner. However, the next line, "It's a knot in my neck, does this speed up your girlfriend?" introduces a sense of unease and insecurity in the relationship. The imagery of a knot in the neck suggests a physical discomfort, which could be a metaphor for the emotional discomfort of feeling unsure where one stands in a relationship. The line, "does this speed up your girlfriend?" adds to the sense of unease, as it is unclear what is meant by "speed up" and why it is relevant to the situation.
The next few lines of the song describe the singer staying up late to "go numb" and asking their partner to "come lie with [them]." This indicates a desire for intimacy and escape from some sort of pain or discomfort. The line, "Keep on holding till the morning," could be interpreted as a plea for reassurance or a need for comfort.
The final verse introduces a new element to the story, with the singers flying over their city and crash landing in a playground. It is unclear whether this is meant to be a physical or metaphorical journey, but it could represent a desire for escape from reality or a need for a fresh start. The song ends with the repeated refrain of "Still can't tell if you love me, are we gonna break the spell?/ Still can't tell if you don't speak, are we gonna break away?" leaving the fate of the relationship up in the air.
Overall, "Ruby" is a song that explores themes of uncertainty, escapism, and the ups and downs of romantic relationships. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the emotional landscape of the song's protagonist, as they navigate the complexities of love and the discomfort that comes with it.
