Stormy Weather
Ben Webster Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't know why, there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time

Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather, just can't get my poor old self together
I'm weary all the time, the time, so weary all of the time
When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray, the lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all of the time

I walk around heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around and I'm still feeling bad
Rain pourin' down, blinding every hope I had
This pitter andd n patter and beating, spattering driving me mad
Love, love, love, love, the misery will be the end of me

When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray, the lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together

Keeps raining all the time, the time
Keeps raining all the time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Stormy Weather" by the Ben Webster Quartet paint a picture of a woman who is enduring a period of sadness and pain since her man left her. Using vivid and intense imagery, the woman speaks of the storm clouds that have gathered since the departure of her lover. She speaks of the misery and gloom that have taken over her life and how she can't seem to pull herself together. She is so heavy-hearted and sad that she can't even find the energy to face the day, and nothing seems to be able to lift her spirits.

The woman talks about how the blues have walked in and met her since her man left, and how she is constantly in pain because of it. She hopes that she will one day be able to walk in the sun once again and enjoy the good times that come with it. She speaks of how the rain is a constant reminder of the pain she is enduring, and how it is driving her mad. Ultimately, she fears that her misery will be the end of her.

The song is a powerful expression of the emotions that come with heartbreak and the pain and sorrow that follow. It captures the feeling of hopelessness that often accompanies the loss of love and the overwhelming sense of sadness that can come with it.

Ben Webster one of the trendsetter tenorists spend many years in Europe dividing his time between Amsterdam and Copenhagen. This info is for our younger generation(s) who are discovering these Jazz Artists from times past. With either Danish or Dutch (mixed with visiting American jazz players) Ben recorded great, and luscious like, intimate albums. This stuff is timeless folks, so relax and let yourself be swayed away on a romantic soft-swinging trip of great tunes. Cheers!

Ronald you know we have to talk with young people , they are nice . Near us is the orphanage of the sity , in the front it has a small piazza included a system for sket bording , where evey youth can bord . For a while i went there to write in the shadow . I got contact with two fellows wich lives in the orphanage ; quickly we talked about music like Rap , House , R & B in the end about JAZZ . I invited the fellows to come over to us for eating pizza together . Beautiful , they have become our young friends . Nice , they come to us at least twice a week . Now mainly the two discuss with Sebastian about everthing , of cource listen to our JAZZ records together .- now i just more and more withdraw . On this way they discovered JAZZ music , and learned to love the great music , also having theire preferences . Both of theme go to university at the end of sommer ,- i'm happy for the two , i'm pround of these fellows . Cheers to you!

Nice story Ms. Brown Hard-Bop Lady. Good on ya! Reminds me a bit of how I came to appreciate this American art form second-hand from other forms of music and outlets as a youth, being one of the `younger generations` Mr. Unkel always mentions with the golden age being before my time. Thank goodness we have Youtube.

Another great jazz musician and pianist who spent many years in Europe was Bud Powell.
