Saven Nation Army
Ben l'Oncle Soul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette

And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone
Oh, oh leave it alone
Leave it alone, oh, yeah
Oh leave it alone

Don't want to hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell

And if I catch it coming back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you, yeah
And that ain't what you wanna hear
But that's what I'll do

And a feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home
Find a home
Find a home, yeah yeah
Find a home
Come on

And a feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home
Find a home

Go back home, oh
Go back home

Overall Meaning

The song “Seven Nation Army” by Ben l'Oncle Soul is a cover of the White Stripes’ original version. The song is an anthem for individuality and rebellion against any force trying to hold one back. The opening lines, “I'm gonna fight 'em off, a seven nation army couldn't hold me back” indicate the determination of the singer to break free from any constraints. The “seven nation army” represents any powerful force, whether it is an oppressive system or a group of people trying to keep the singer from achieving their goals. The singer is ready to fight back against this force and is confident in their ability to do so.

The second verse of the song is about the singer’s internal conflict. The lyrics “And I'm talking to myself at night, because I can't forget, back and forth through my mind, behind a cigarette” convey that the singer is constantly battling with themselves because they can’t shake off certain thoughts. This could be related to the challenges they face in life and their quest for freedom. In the bridge, the lyrics “And the message coming from my eyes, says leave it alone” suggest that the singer is wary of the destructive force they are up against, and that they are trying to stay away from it.

In the chorus, the singer declares that they “Don't want to hear about it,” meaning that they are done with listening to the stories of others who might have already succumbed to the force holding them back. The singer is determined to find their own path and is willing to fight for it. The song ends by repeating the chorus, but the last line is changed to “Go back home”. This could be interpreted as the singer finding a home within themselves or their community, after breaking free from the constraints.

I grew up on this version of the song. 7 years after hearing it for the first time, and I still think it’s the best version.

I don't think I have enough thumbs for this version... Awesome.

This is an awesome version. I would not say this is better or worse than the original White Stripes. They are both awesome versions in their own right and for different reasons. White Stripes (2003), Ben L'ONCLE Soul (2010), Marcus Collins (2012) All three are awesome versions

My favorite is Nostalgia '77 feat. Alice Russell. But that's the mark of a great song, when it can spawn amazing covers
