Magnificat
Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of St. Maurice & St. Maur Clervaux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

""My soul doth magnify the Lord:
And my spirit hath rejoiced in
God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded:
The lowliness of his hand-maiden.
For behold, from henceforth:
All generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me:
And holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him:
Throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm:
He hath scattered the proud in the
Imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat:
And hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things:
And the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen
His servant Israel:
As he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
And to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be:

World without end.
Amen.""

Overall Meaning

The song "Magnificat" is a hymn of praise to God and it is often considered to be one of the most important canticles in Christian worship. The song is based on the text of the Gospel of Luke, where Mary, the mother of Jesus, declares her joy and humility at being chosen to bear the son of God. The lyrics of the hymn express a deep sense of gratitude and wonder for the blessings that God has bestowed upon Mary and upon all of humanity.

The first part of the song speaks of the magnification of the Lord by Mary's soul and the rejoicing of her spirit in God her savior. She acknowledges that God has regarded the lowliness of his hand-maiden and that all generations shall call her blessed. The second part of the song continues with the theme of the mightiness of God and the mercy that is bestowed upon those who fear him. It speaks of God's strength and his ability to scatter the proud in the imagination of their hearts while uplifting the meek and humble. The hungry are filled with good things while the rich are sent empty away. Mary declares that God has remembered his mercy and has helped his servant Israel as he promised to Abraham and his seed forever.
