He first came to the music industry's attention with his collaboration with, and arrangements for, Keren Ann and his sister Coralie Clément. Finally earning a solo contract after many years of struggle, Biolay released his debut album, Rose Kennedy, in 2002. A concept album, Rose Kennedy looks at early 1960s America through the cataractic eyes of the late matriarch, who went from attending dinner parties to suffering the assassination of two of her sons.
Next up was Négatif, a double CD full of sometimes violent imagery surrounding a group of drifters, which included a disaffected, oddly sympathetic, american named Billy Bob. Biolay released two albums in 2005, A L'origine (translated: In The Beginning) is a darker, denser work than his previous outings, while Home is a light, sunny duet album with his wife, started when they noticed that they needed good road trip CD to listen to while on vacation. He has also written film scores, songs and arrangements for such beloved french stars as Francoise Hardy, Juliette Greco and Henri Salvador.
He worked with Elodie Frégé on her second album Le Jeu des 7 erreurs
(including lead single "La Ceinture") which was released in autumn 2006.

no manga no bongo
une chaise a Tokyo
no manga no bongo
une chaise a Tokyo
que je ne connais pas
no manga no bongo
no manga no bongo
une chaise a Tokyo
d'un nouveau soda
no manga no bongo
une chaise a Tokyo
que je ne connais pas
no manga no bongo
une chaise a Tokyo
quant au reste on verra?
The song "Chaise à Tokyo" by Benjamin Biolay speaks of the desire to escape one's current reality and take a journey to Tokyo. The singer wants to sit on a chair in Tokyo and take in the sights from a luxury suite at the Hotel Nikko. The lyrics suggest that the singer wants to leave behind all that is familiar and experience something entirely new, represented by the "new soda" and the idea that "quant au reste on verra" or "as for the rest, we will see."
The second half of the song brings in memories of the singer's past, with a mention of a Sunday drive in a white car and a straight old piano that the singer's uncle didn't want anyone playing "without heart." Despite these memories, the singer insists that "tout ca est loin derrière" or "all of that is far behind" and that it is pointless to dream of returning to it.
Overall, the song seems to be about the desire to escape and experience something new, but acknowledges the impossibility of truly leaving one's past behind. The emphasis on the "chaise a Tokyo" is likely symbolic of a desire for luxury and a sense of being above one's current situation.
