Learning piano from age 11, Clementine left school at 16 after failing most of his examinations. Following this, he had a dispute with his family and ended up in Camden Town, London, homeless and in psychological and financial difficulties. He relocated to Paris at age 19, where he spent a number of years busking and playing in bars and hotels in Place de Clichy while sleeping on the streets. Discovered busking in the Paris Métro, he was signed to Matthieu Gazier and Lionel Bensemoun's label Behind.
Clementine's first EP, Cornerstone, was released in June 2013 with three studio tracks. It was re-issued in October 2013 with three additional acoustic tracks.
His debut album, "At Least for Now", was released across Europe in January 2015. The album won the 2015 Mercury Music Prize.
His second album, "I Tell a Fly", was released in 2017.
"And I Have Been" is Clementine's third studio album, announced on 30 August 2022, and released on 28 October 2022.

Nemesis
Benjamin Clementine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If I held my breath on you
I will die a thousand times
And if chewing was to show you how much I cared
I would have probably be wearing dentures by now
If I held my breath on you
And if chewing was to show you how much I cared
I would have probably be wearing dentures by now
Promises broken
Nemesis our token
Turned around and marched on out to a new home
Oh but wherever you've gone darling
Don't forget to
Treat others the way, you wanna be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered
(He chants march on)
If you held your breath on me
You would have died a million times
And if chewing was to show me how much I cared
You would have probably swallowed your tongue by now
All am trying to say is that you know very well that I left her for you
Now I guess you are doing the same old same thing to me now
These days Hennessy dries my veins
Whilst our genesis flies back at me
Now heresy might be your new faith, faith
But whatever you believe in
Make sure you never forget to
Treat others the way, you wanna be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered
Treat others the way, you will want to be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered
Can't say anything for you no more
Nemesis is on your case baby
Next time
Treat others the way you will want to be treated
Else there will be punishment
Oh and there she comes
Life ain't a bitch
Nemesis is
And she is the mother of Karma
So long you run
The lyrics to Benjamin Clementine's song "Nemesis" speak of a relationship that has ended and the pain and regret that comes with it. The singer seems to be addressing their ex-partner directly and expressing their hurt and anger at being left for someone else. The line "If I held my breath on you, I would die a thousand times" suggests that the singer was deeply invested in the relationship and the betrayal has hit them hard. The repetition of the line "Treat others the way you want to be treated" is a plea for empathy and acknowledgement that actions have consequences. The line "Nemesis is on your case" reinforces this idea that the singer believes in karma and that their ex-partner will face consequences for their betrayal.
The song's title, "Nemesis," refers to the ancient Greek concept of the goddess of retribution or revenge. The singer's use of the word suggests that they believe their ex-partner's actions will ultimately result in their downfall, as they are being punished by Nemesis for their betrayal. The lyrics also reference the idea of the passage of time and the inevitability of death, with the line "Remember your days are fully numbered" reminding us to make the most of our time and treat others with kindness and respect.
Overall, the lyrics to "Nemesis" are raw, honest, and emotional. They speak to the pain and complexity of relationships and the importance of being mindful of our actions and their consequences.
