Give Me Direction
Benjamin Dube Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My past has kept me where I am
Now is the time to give me directions; to move on
Shine your light upon me
I know that time has come for me
Give me the strength to move on
(Repeat)
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani
I know that time has come from me
Give me the strength to move on
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani
Shine your light upon me
I know that time has come for me
(Give me the strength to move on
Give me direction to move on)x2
I know that time has come for me
Give me the strength to move on
The lyrics of Benjamin Dubeβs song βGive Me Directionβ with a repeating chorus βGive me direction to move on, Give me the strength to move onβ express a desire to move on from a place of stagnation caused by the burden of the past. The line βWhere to from here, if not with you?β suggests that the singer is seeking guidance from a higher power or perhaps a mentor, as they acknowledge that their past experiences have kept them stuck in one place. In the bridge, the phrase βEloi, Eloi, lama sabachthaniβ is spoken, which means βMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?β in Aramaic, and is a quote from Jesus on the cross in the Bible.
The main theme of the song is the need for direction, guidance, and strength to move forward. The urgency in the singerβs voice suggests that they are ready to overcome their past and progress in life. The use of biblical references and plea to God for guidance also adds a spiritual dimension to the song. The lyrics, combined with the songβs powerful melody, create an emotional performance that inspires hope and motivates the listener to seek guidance when they feel lost.
