Hi friends, Iโ€™d like to briefly address a sensitive point mentioned in the comments about the more recent dark history of the island. To be frank itโ€™s a part of their history I hadnโ€™t fully understood was still a problem until the very end of the trip. I sensed while there that many people kept to themselves and really didnโ€™t like me walking around with a camera. Which also made it harder to interview people to understand what life is like. As I read more deeply about the recent past, it was truly disturbing and we felt very conflicted about what story to tell.

I have traveled to so many places with complex stories, and usually, I donโ€™t go into all the details of everything bad that has happened in every place, it would obviously never fit into a 20min story. Thereโ€™s so much to every country or location and we canโ€™t cover it all. Ultimately, we decided to not go into all the details of (1) how they all died on the island once they got there, also a crazy story and (2) break down the details of the more recent dark scandals. It was a decision we made while working on the edit given what we captured, but also something I still feel conflicted about.

Some may understand, so may not. Itโ€™s a tough choice as we travel to chose what angle we should take. Should I talk about all the corruption in x, y, z place, or should I talk about the people? How far back into the history should I go? Whatโ€™s ultimately the story I wanted to tell? These are questions I have to make endless decisions on every video, and in the end if letโ€™s say there are 20 big topics to cover about a place, we can really only break down 3-5 in each story. For this one we decided to focus on what we focused on but we knew if people wanted to know more, it wouldnโ€™t take long for them to find it with their own research.

Appreciate all of those of you who have watched it so far, at the end of the day there is no part of this islandโ€™s history thatโ€™s bright. And I hope I made that clear. My own experience was nuanced and confusing and I did my best to create a compelling story with what I got while there. Happy to break down more in depth how I felt on some form of a podcast if people really want to hear more. I think youโ€™ll understand my sentiment in greater detail. I just didnโ€™t think the majority of people would care. For now, the story is the way it is and I hope you still find the history we chose to cover interesting.

@Sabina thank you for the detailed response! I read the same - the big fence gang... They also control access to the machinery (tractor etc) which enable the people to grow food and exports. Those who don't have the licence have to pay islanders for their help (building homes, farming etc) I don't think this has changed too much either. I read recently that Shawn Christian (Olive and Steve's son, who was also charged) is still part of the island's governing body...
I got the impression that new families moving to the island are useful because they come with their savings trying to start a new life and islanders can profit from them.
I think they realised after the trials that the outside world was now paying attention, and they needed to improve their press to bring in fresh blood but aren't actually remorseful in any way.
Obviously that is my speculation as I don't know them personally and haven't been to the Island before.
I find omissions are very telling in general though and this was a big one from Yes Theory...
They're profiting from selling the place and the romanticised colonial stories while turning a blind eye to the reality.
Just casually mentioned that they went to Tahiti to get bread fruit to feed slaves but sure they're incredible pioneering adventures ๐Ÿ‘ That really put me off because I feel like their brand image is more wholesome and progressive than that.

Also wanted to add that from my understanding the trials included cases of children under 14. That most were 'broken in' (a truly disgusting phrase) by 12. Some of the reported assaults were against girls even younger than that.

Hi friends, I hope you enjoy this wild and incredible story. To address a technical aspect Iโ€™m sure a few commenters will point out ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿซถ depending on how you measure and which source you find, another island โ€œTristan Da Cunhaโ€ has claimed to be most remote. Thatโ€™s because itโ€™s 7-day boat ride to the nearest airport instead of the 4-day trip it took me to Pitcairn. But if you measure distance from closest continent, Pitcairn blows them all out of the park. Ultimately, Pitcairnโ€™s unbelievable story is what made me chose to go there, you all know by now that a 7-day boat trip wouldnโ€™t scare me away if the stronger story was on the other island. I hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it ๐Ÿ™
