I Left My Heart in San Francisco
Bennett Tony Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The loveliness of Paris seems somehow sadly gray
The glory that was Rome is of another day
I've been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home to my city by the Bay

I left my heart in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars
The morning fog may chill the air, I don't care

My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea

When I come home to you, San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” express the singer’s longing for the city he loves. The song begins with Bennett describing how other cities pale in comparison to San Francisco, which has captured his heart. He contrasts the “loveliness” of Paris and the “glory” of Rome with the vibrant beauty of San Francisco. He then admits that he has been feeling “terribly alone and forgotten” in New York City, and he longs to return home to his beloved city by the Bay.

Bennett uses vivid imagery to describe the allure of San Francisco, with its iconic cable cars that climb “halfway to the stars.” Although the morning fog may be chilly, he doesn’t care, because his heart belongs in San Francisco. The chorus of the song repeats the central refrain, “I left my heart in San Francisco,” as Bennett expresses his love for the city and the person waiting for him there.

@Smenkhaare

Visited San Francisco twice in 1999 and 2000. Lovely city and if I lived in California (I live in NYC), it would be San Francisco. A very walkable city as well. Unusual for California.
