Isn't It Romantic
Bennett Tony Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Isn't it romantic
Music in the night
A dream that can be heard

Isn't it romantic
Moving shadows write the oldest magic word
I hear the breezes playing in the trees up above
While all the world is saying you were meant for love

Isn't it romantic
merely to be young on such a night as this
Isn't it romantic
Every note that's sung is like a lover's kiss

Sweet symbols in the moonlight
do you think that I will fall in love per chance?
Isn't it romance?

Isn't it romantic
On a moonlight night
She’ll cook me onion soup

Kiddies are romantic
and if we don't fight we soon will have a troupe
We'll help the population,

it's a duty that we owe to dear old France
Isn’t it romance?

Overall Meaning

The song "Isn't It Romantic" by Tony Bennett is a lighthearted and whimsical ode to romance, love, and the magic of the night. The song opens with the lines "Isn't it romantic, music in the night, a dream that can be heard," which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The lyrics evoke an image of a beautiful, moonlit night, with breezes playing in the trees and the world whispering that love is meant for the singer. The shadows, in turn, write the oldest and most powerful magic word, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of the night. Every note sung is compared to a lover's kiss, while sweet symbols float in the moonlight. The song suggests that love is magical and that it is remarkable to be young on such a night.

The verse continues to capture the romantic spirit of the song, with phrases like "she'll cook me onion soup" and "if we don't fight, we soon will have a troupe." These lyrics are somewhat random and seem to be intended to add a bit of comedic relief to the otherwise romantic song.

Thank you, grandma and dad, for introducing me to Tony Bennett when I was a kid. He has this unmistakable charm, warmth, humbleness, sincerity, love---- and of course that VOICE! I fell in love with Tony B and Nat King Cole when I was 9 and now that I'm in my 40's, I'm never letting go. If I ever have children, I will DEFINATELY be introducing them to this kind of music.

What a line -up ! The great Tony Bennett with the very special George Barnes / Ruby Braff Quartet.

This is one of the prettiest songs from Rodgers and Hart, which makes it one of the prettiest in the entire GAS. There's a bunch of beautiful versions of this tune on this site. In terms of carrying Lorenz Hart's lyric and making it sound like a personal statement, I think Tony's is the best of the lot. Rudy Braff sure helps out on trumpet.
