Don't Be That Way
Benny Goodman & His Orhestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Clouds in the sky should never make you feel that way
The rain will bring the violets of May, tears are in vain
So honey, please don't be that way.
As long as we see it through,
You'll have me, I'll have you.
Sweetheart, tomorrow is another day,
Don't break my heart,
The lyrics of the song "Don't Be That Way" by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, depict a romantic relationship that suffers due to the emotional reaction of one of the partners. The singer tries to comfort his/her loved one by saying they should not be upset by the temporary setback of the clouds or the rain, because they will give way to better things in the future, represented by the violets of May. The lyrics encourage the partner not to give up on the relationship and not to be unhappy over temporary obstacles. The singer offers assurances that the two of them can make it through anything as long as they stick together and face the challenges with a positive attitude.
The lyrics of the song reflect the popular theme of big band/swing music of the mid-twentieth century, where love and relationships were presented in a romanticized way as a central concern of life. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, stressing the importance of communication, understanding, and mutual support. They convey a sense of optimism and hope for the future, emphasizing the idea that things will get better if the couple remains committed and steadfast in their love for each other.

Now in my late-50's--it's strange to me that I didn't develop an appreciation for this high-quality music decades ago! In those days, I even lived near a radio station that broadcast the swing/big-band format! Let me tell you, these artists had CLASS, which is sorely lacking on the airwaves today!
