Nature Boy
Benson George Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a boy
Very strange
Enchanted boy;
They say be wander'd very far
Very far over land and sea.
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise
Very wise was be.
And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me:

The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return,to be loved in return.
And then one day

Overall Meaning

Nature Boy is a song written by eden ahbez in 1947, and Benson George's version was released in 1977. The song's lyrics tell the story of "a very strange enchanted boy" who "wandered very far, over land and sea;" the boy is described as both shy and sad, but also wise. The singer tells of a magic day when the boy passed by, and they spoke of "many things, fools and kings." The boy then reveals that "the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."

The song is an exploration of the human condition, with the boy representing a kind of shamanic figure who has seen the world and understands its inner workings. The song suggests that the key to a happy life is not wealth, power, or fame, but instead is the ability to love and be loved. The boy may be viewed as a kind of prophet or guru, offering the singer (and by extension, the listener) a valuable lesson in the nature of true happiness.

This song was my husband favorite song, he could play it in the drums, today is his first anniversary of his passing. In his memorial I played and I played all the songs he loved.

To think this man ever had any doubts about his singing voice. I was a teenager, woke to this voice, jumped out of bed and made my way to the record store, waaay back when. Blessed and grateful for days like that LOL

Nobody sings nature boy like George Benson !!!

@donaldelley2802

Except Nat King Cole who was ten times better.

@Donald Elley I was about to say something like this. The original tune by Nat King Cole gives me goosebumps every time. But still, George, as a singer AND genius guitarist, made something great. Plus, I would quote the name of Hugh Coltman too !

@fernando456563

I desagree Nat King Cole is the man, Benson is good as well.
