Another Day In The System
Beres Hammond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another day in the system, burning,
People wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
We're building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

Now tell me,
Isn't it clear to see,
That the leaders just don't care,
If we should live or we should die.
Oh, so long as they get their share.
Now tell me what are we going to do,
People should arrange up a coup,
And must be willing to sacrifice.
'Cause if we think too high the price,

It's gonna be another day in the system, burning,
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
We're building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

They tell you don't forget to call me sir,
As we are not friends of the same class.
And keep a smile upon your face,
Be remembered I'm the boss.
They want us to think we've got no pride,
We're living just to stay alive.
But we're not giving up on life.
Until we win the grand first prize.

It's gonna be another day in the system,
Burning, burning, burning.
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
Building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

They'll wanna kill you for the truth,
But for me it's been much too long.
And I won't take it anymore.
The old system is so wrong.
Now tell me what are we gonna do,
People should arrange up a coup,
And must be willing to sacrifice,
'Cause if we think too high the price,

It's gonna be another day in the system,
Burning, burning.
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Gonna be another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.

Building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going ...

Overall Meaning

Beres Hammond’s song β€œAnother Day in the System” is a commentary on the poverty and suffering in society, specifically in Jamaica, and the need for change to happen. The lyrics go through the struggles of everyday life for working-class people who are stuck in a system that they cannot escape. The opening lines describe the feeling of being trapped in a burning system, where people work hard but still have nothing to show for it. The repeated lines β€œpeople wanna change” emphasize the desire to see a difference in society.

The verses point out the insincerity of leaders who don't care about the people they are supposed to represent and who only care about their own interests. The cost of change may be high, but the price of staying stuck in the same system is too much to bear. The line β€œThey’ll wanna kill you for the truth” suggests that those in power will do anything to maintain it, including harming those who seek to change it.

The chorus repeats twice, emphasizing the desire for change and the struggle that comes with trying to achieve it. The song calls for people to organize and sacrifice for a revolution that will improve society and create a better future for everyone.

If we should live or we should die.

Oh, so long as they get their share.

At this point, I repeat my question, directing it to everyone in earshot.

Despite all their efforts, we refuse to give up on our dreams and hopes for a better future.

Until we win the grand first prize.
We will continue to struggle until we ultimately triumph, achieving our most grand and cherished goals.

They'll wanna kill you for the truth,
Those in power will do everything they can to silence and eliminate anyone who speaks the truth about their oppression.

But for me it's been much too long.
However, I have been oppressed for far too long and have reached my breaking point.

And I won't take it anymore.
I have decided that I will not tolerate this oppression anymore and am ready to fight against it.

The old system is so wrong.
We all recognize that the current system is flawed and needs to be radically overhauled.
