Will I Ever Understand You
Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mirror mirror tell me beware
Coldly revealing all the faces I wear
From a teasing smile for boys on the street
To a shifty glance for eyes looking too deep

Feel the light as it shines so bright
Will I ever understand you
Reach inside the truth is alive
Will I ever understand you
Always fighting to find out why
But it seems the answer fades into a white flag sky

Feel the light as it shines so bright
Will I ever understand you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Berlin's song "Will I Ever Understand You" speaks of a struggle to understand one's own identity and the various masks that one wears in different situations. The first two lines of the song, "Mirror mirror tell me beware, Coldly revealing all the faces I wear," talk about the reflection in the mirror becoming a warning to the singer about the complexities of their identity. They are reminded of the different personas they carry within them- a teasing smile for boys, a shifty glance for judgemental eyes, and so on.

The chorus, "Feel the light as it shines so bright, Will I ever understand you, Reach inside the truth is alive, Will I ever understand you," emphasizes the singer's yearning to understand themselves and others. The lines "Always fighting to find out why, But it seems the answer fades into a white flag sky" suggest that even though they continue to search for answers, it's like waving a white flag of surrender, an endless search with no concrete answer.

In summary, the song is a powerful statement about our constant struggle to comprehend our own identity and eventually understand others. It's a reminder that we all wear different faces, and it takes effort and self-awareness to piece together the different facets of our personality.

Muito boa essa música

This is a stunningly good album which the only well-known song is perhaps the weakest. And this song is a great way to start it (the album ends well too). Too bad Berlin sort of disintegrated after this and could not follow up.
