overload
Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Millions of city lights
Burning bright in the night
Too many circuits on plugged in machines
Neon lights disengage
Television is the rage
Life support systems
Supporting every need
Where are you going?
When the lights flicker
It's a power failure
An overload
The lights are out tonight

Children in darkness
Hearing lovers play their games
Babies crying, people fighting
Looters are in a rage
Too many circuits on plugged in machines
Atomic reactors
space technology

Where are you going?
When the lights flicker
It's a power failure
An overload
The lights are out tonight

Electrons disconnect
Negative charges exploding
Too many circuits on plugged in machines
Wire connecting wire
Social disease
Life support systems
Supporting every need

Where are you going?
When the lights flicker
It's a power failure
An overload
The lights are out tonight

Too many circuits on plugged in machines
Like irons, toasters, vibrators, heating pads,
swimming pools, air conditioners, calculators,
hair driers, blenders, electric toothbrushes,
record players, televisions, garages, tape machines,

night lights, microwave ovens, power saws,
vacuum cleaners, water pics, cuisinarts !

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Berlin's "Overload" are a commentary on the overwhelming nature of modern technology and the toll it takes on society. The song begins with an image of millions of city lights burning bright in the night, but quickly turns to warn of the dangers of too many circuits on plugged in machines. The chorus asks the listener where they are going when the lights flicker, implying that the overload of technology is leading us towards a power failure, both literally and metaphorically.

The verses of the song paint a bleak picture of what can happen when the power goes out: children in darkness, people fighting, looters in a rage. The bridge describes the electrons disconnecting, negative charges exploding, as if the overload of technology is causing a breakdown in the very fabric of society. The final verse lists various appliances and gadgets, from irons and toasters to tape machines and microwaves, as examples of the many circuits on plugged in machines that are contributing to the overload.

Overall, "Overload" is a warning against the dangers of becoming too reliant on technology, and suggests that we need to be mindful of the impact it has on our lives and society as a whole.

I am surprised that Berlin doesn't acknowledge this LP. I guess it is because Terri isn't the lead vocal but this is John Crawford's band.
