Fanning was taught the piano by his mother at an early age. At the age of 12, while attending St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, Fanning began writing music, and upon graduating from St. Joseph's, moved on to the University of Queensland, where he studied journalism for a short time. He would go on to drop out to pursue a music career after meeting Ian Haug in an economics class. Fanning joined Haug, John Collins, and Steven Bishop, who had recently formed Powderfinger, and took the role of lead singer. Subsequently, Bishop left and guitarist Darren Middleton joined.
From 1994 to 2004 Powderfinger released five albums, a double CD live album, and a Best Of, after which they decided to take a break. Fanning's solo album Tea & Sympathy was released in October 2005 and debuted at #1 on the Australian ARIA Albums chart. Singles released from this album were Wish You Well, Songbird and Watch Over Me.
Fanning won three ARIA awards in 2006, Best Male Artist, Album of the Year for Tea and Sympathy, and Best Music Video for Wish You Well. In the same year Wish You Well was voted in at #1 on Australian youth radio station Triple J's 2005 Hottest 100 poll.
Fanning also contributed songs to the 2003 film Ned Kelly including Shelter For My Soul and a cover of the traditional song Moreton Bay.
Powderfinger released their 6th studio album, Dream Days At The Hotel Existence in June 2007 and toured with Silverchair that autumn.
After the disbanding of Powderfinger in 2010, Fanning moved to Spain with his family where he began writing and recording demos for his next solo album. In January 2013 Fanning announced on his website blog that he had been recording the follow up to 2005's "Tea and Sympathy" in Los Angeles. In March 2013 he announced via his blog that recording had been completed and he had returned back to Australia. On 22nd April 2013 the first single Battleships was released. Fanning's second album, Departures, was released on 7th June 2013. Since the album release, two more singles have been released: Departures (Blue Toowong Skies) and Tell Me How It Ends.

Turn the world to blank and the game is done
I hope and I pray that the rainbow comes
You'll change your mind don't shoot the gun
You can sail on seven seas
Lend your heart out to who you please
Where ever you travel what ever you see
Goodnight moon goodbye sun
What goes with you is all my love
I hope your best is yet to come
Let's close the book what's done is done
'cause yesterday's gone
There you go now you're off your leash
Go rid your heart of its great disease
Where ever you travel what ever you see
Don't forget the love you got from me
Goodnight moon goodbye sun
What goes with you is all my love
I hope your best is yet to come
Let's close the book what's done is done
'cause yesterday's gone
Yesterday's Gone
Yesterday's Gone
Yesterday's Gone
Yesterday's Gone
The song "Yesterday's Gone" by Bernard Fanning is a beautiful melancholic ballad about a break-up. The lyrics describe the end of a relationship where the singer hopes his partner finds happiness but also wants to remind them of the love they had shared. The first verse talks about the partner's tendency to shut down emotionally when things get tough. They have used this "oldest trick" before and it's an ineffective way of dealing with their problems. The poet prays for the rainbow to come, which is a symbol of hope, and asks the partner not to shoot the gun, which suggests he wants to avoid arguments and fights. The second verse conveys a sense of resignation to the situation. The singer acknowledges that the partner has the freedom to do as they please and see the world, but he pleads for them not to forget the love they shared, which he hopes will serve as a reminder of their time together and the deep feelings he once had for them. The chorus repeats the phrase "yesterday's gone," which suggests that the singer has come to terms with the end of the relationship and is ready to move on.
The use of metaphors and symbols in this song is particularly interesting. The reference to the rainbow as a symbol of hope is a common image in poetry and literature. The poet hopes that his partner will see that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that they will find happiness again. The line "what goes with you is all my love" is another example of metaphorical language, suggesting that the singer has given his all to the relationship and that the love he felt for his partner will stay with them even after they part ways. The repetition of the phrase "yesterday's gone" adds a sense of finality to the song, emphasizing that the relationship is over and cannot be saved. Overall, "Yesterday's Gone" is a poignant and emotional song that many listeners can relate to.
