Paris
Bernard Lavilliers Lyrics

J'adore le ciel de Paris
J'adore cette fille de bandit
Qui se balade en guêpière
Quand je retourne en enfer

Mon capital de bas noirs
Tu changes de fille tous les soirs
Et dans les bulles de cristal
Me balances les fleurs du mal

Tu me manques terriblement
Tu me manques passionnément
Tu me manques, c'est fascinant
Paris, t'es si belle encore
Paris, tu changes de décor
Paris, tu ressembles à personne

Ma capitale de douleur
Vienne la nuit, sonne l'heure
Un rouge baiser, un miroir
Tout redevient provisoire

Paris, t'as des yeux gris-bleus
T'es plutôt brune à mes yeux
Entre Desnos et Prévert
Tu choisis Apollinaire

Tu me manques terriblement
Tu me manques passionnément
Tu me manques, c'est fascinant
Paris, t'es si belle encore
Paris, tu changes de décor
Paris, tu ressembles à personne

Je t'aime, ma fille de faubourg
Avec tes chansons d'amour
Je t'aime, vipère du trottoir
Plumant le micheton dans le noir

Mon ange exterminateur
T'es dure avec le malheur
Tu fais de cadeaux à personne
Et là, Paris, tu déconnes

Tu me manques terriblement
Tu me manques passionnément
Tu me manques, c'est fascinant
Paris, t'es si belle encore
Paris, tu changes de décor
Paris, tu ressembles à personne

Paris, j'veux pas qu'on t'épouse

Reste infidèle et jalouse
Paris, tu ressembles à personne

Overall Meaning

The song "Paris" by Bernard Lavilliers is a tribute to the city of Paris. The singer expresses his love for the city and his admiration for a certain "girl of a bandit" who walks around in a corset. He talks about his love for the "capital of black stockings," a reference to the city's reputation as a center of fashion and style. He also describes how the girl he admires changes partners every night and how she teases him with the "flowers of evil" (a reference to a book by Charles Baudelaire).

The verses then take on a more melancholic tone. The singer talks about how he misses Paris, and how she is "so beautiful" but always changing. He describes her as a city of pain, where everything becomes temporary in the light of a "red kiss" and a "mirror." He talks about how Paris has grey-blue eyes and is "rather brown" to him, referring to the city's multiculturalism. He then likens Paris to famous French poets, saying she chooses between the surrealism of Desnos, the romanticism of Prévert, and the symbolism of Apollinaire.

In the final verse, the singer expresses his love for Paris as a "daughter of the suburb" with her love songs and her ruthlessness in fleecing customers ("plumant le micheton dans le noir"). He calls her his "exterminating angel" who is tough on those who experience misfortune but does not give gifts to anyone. He ends the song by saying he doesn't want to marry Paris but wants her to remain unfaithful and jealous, as she is--in his opinion--unmatched.
