Stand The Ghetto
Bernard Lavilliers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Si tu penses reggae
Tu balances reggae
Sans défense reggae
C'est spécial le reggae
Infernal reggae
Ça commence à cogner
I and I love the island in the sun
I and I know when and where I go
But it is so hard to feed my kids
But it is so hard to stand the ghetto
Tout le monde danse, tu te traînes
Tout le monde fume et tu bois
Downtown, ça enchaîne
Dans les rhumbars en bois
Quand ça cause le reggae
Ça explose reggae
C'est la soul reggae
Qui déboule reggae
I and I love the island in the sun
I and I know when and where I go
But it is so hard to feed my kids
But it is so hard to stand the ghetto
Derrière les barbelés
Trois rangés bien gardées
Ils attendent de crever
De sortir, de braquer
Pour le flingue dans ta poche
T'es coincé à gun court
Jusque-là le reggae
Viendra te réveiller
I and I love the island in the sun
I and I know when and where I go
But it is so hard to feed my kids
But it is so hard to stand the ghetto
Elle est noire et dorée
Elle est belle à crever
Regarde-la marcher
Et danser son reggae
Fait trop chaud pour chanter
Fait trop soif pour noter
Trop beau pour t'expliquer
Ce qui se passe dans le reggae
I and I love the island in the sun
I and I know when and where I go
But it is so hard to feed my kids
But it is so hard to stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
To stand the ghetto
The opening verse of Bernard Lavilliers's song "Stand The Ghetto" speaks to the power of reggae music and its ability to move people, both emotionally and physically. The lyrics describe how those who love and think reggae become enveloped in its rhythm, becoming defenseless against its power. The repetition of the word "reggae" throughout this verse reinforces the idea that the music is all-encompassing and has a hold on its listeners.
As the song progresses, Lavilliers sings about his love for the island and the struggles he faces in providing for his family. Despite his love for the music and his homeland, he acknowledges the difficulties of living in the poverty-stricken "ghetto." The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the harsh reality of life in the ghetto, including the desperation that can lead people to turn to crime.
The last verse of the song focuses on a beautiful, black woman who is dancing to the reggae music. Lavilliers notes that the music is so powerful that it is "too beautiful to explain." In referencing this woman, he seems to be suggesting that reggae music can be a respite from the difficulties of life in the ghetto, providing moments of joy and solace even in the midst of desperation.
Overall, "Stand The Ghetto" is a powerful tribute to the power of reggae music, as well as an honest and raw portrayal of the struggles faced by those living in poverty.
