October Song
Bert Jansch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll sing you this October song
There's no song before it
The words and tune are none of my own
For my joys and sorrows bore it

Beside the sea the brambly briars
In the still of evening
Birds fly out behind the sun
And with them I'll be leaving

The fallen leaves that jewel the ground
They know the art of dying
And leave with joy their glad gold hearts
In scarlet shadows lying

When hunger calls my footsteps home
The morning follows after
L swim the seas within my mind
And the pine trees laugh green laughter

L used to search for happiness
L used to follow pleasure
But l found a door behind my mind
And that's the greatest treasure

For rulers like to lay down laws
And rebels like to break them
And the poor priests like to walk in chains

L met a man whose name was time
He said I must be going
But just how long ago that was
L have no way of knowing

Sometimes l want to murder time
Sometimes when my heart's aching
But mostly l just stroll along
The path that he is taking

I'll sing you this October Song
There is no song before it
The words and tune are none of my own
For my joys and sorrows bore it

Beside the sea the brambly briars
In the cool of evening

The birds fly out behind the sun
And with them I'll be leaving

Overall Meaning

The beginning of "October Song" by Bert Jansch creates a feeling of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time. He sings of a song that has never been sung before, yet the words and tune were not his own. The joy and sorrows of his life have led him to this moment, and the song is a product of that. The imagery of the brambly briars and fallen leaves suggest a melancholy feeling permeating the song, as though there is a sense of loss that can never be fully recaptured.

Jansch sings of wanting to murder time and the ache in his heart. These lines reveal a sense of frustration and a desire to escape the constraints of life, but despite these feelings, he has found beauty in his surroundings. The pine trees laugh green laughter, and the leaves leave with joy, understanding the art of dying. The final lines suggest that the singer is going on a journey, leaving the sea and the brambly briars behind.

Overall, "October Song" is a melancholic, introspective piece that explores the beauty and pain of life. Jansch finds solace in the natural world around him, yet there is a sense of dissatisfaction with the concept of time and life's constraints.

Bert once sent me a handwritten birthday greeting through a friend, before we had met. Thankfully I was able to meet him with the Pentangle reunion It was wonderful to meet such a gentle soul and true talent. I`ll always cherish the memory. Two years ago on my birthday, October 5th, as I was preparing my set list and writing a song of Berts on it the news came across the radio that he had passed. I brought his card to my gig and shared my wonderful memories with everyone. Much love to you Bert.

What a wonderful rendition of a wonderful song - didn't think anyone could beat Robin's version but this is great.

A great song by Robin Williamson on The Incredible String Band's first album. Not quite up to Robin's original but still wonderful. RIP.

This is the definitive version of October Song, Bert was a truly great and inspirational guitarist, ISB wish they could have played like this. I was a big fan of ISB and saw them play live several times.

I was lucky enough to see Pentangle 6 times. Bert was always a wayward magic. A man who has made my life's journey so much richer.

Thank you to Incredible String Band for this song - off their jewel f a first LP. It feels like it was made for Bert's voice. He equals Robin's original take and adds some beautiful swing.
