Oh My Father
Bert Jansch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh my father, where can you be?
Do you travel the earth just like me.
As you pass on your way
Can you hear people cry
Can you hear people cry in the night

Have you seen the hungry faces from the east
Or have you seen the wealthy princess from the west
Have you seen the cornfields burned to the ground
Just to keep there prices high and their keep money safe and sound
Have you seen the little children starve and die

Have you seen the light of God burning bright
Of revelation that blinds your wicked ways
As he granted entrance to a seven layer home
Has he given license to preach his love abroad
Has you given up your soul to this all?

Or have you weakened and set your body free
Let your mind grow with dreams of a-misery
Can you smell the poppy seed blow through the air
Or is it ruby you need and a woman young and fair
Have you sold out to the Devils grin?

Oh my father, where can you be?
Do you travel the earth just like me.
As you pass on your way

Can you hear people cry
Can you hear people cry in the night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bert Jansch’s song “Oh My Father” are a contemplation on the nature of the singer’s absent father, and on the conditions of the world he travels through. The song begins with a direct address to the father, asking where he is and if he too travels the world. The next lines turn to a series of questions about what the father may have encountered on his travels. The singer asks if his father has seen the faces of hunger in the east, or the wealthy princesses in the west. Then he asks if his father has witnessed the destruction of cornfields just to raise prices, or the death of children from starvation. It is a powerful indictment of the world's cruelty and inequality.

The final verses of the song are the most enigmatic. The singer asks if his father has seen “the light of God burning bright,” and if he has given “up [his] soul to this all.” It’s unclear whether this is a reference to religious conversion or something more metaphysical. The final line asks if the father has “sold out to the Devil's grin,” which could be a reference to giving into temptation or simply enjoying the pleasures of the world without regard for the suffering that accompanies them. The song ends on a mournful note, with the singer once again asking if his father can hear the cries of the world in the night.
