Poison
Bert Jansch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I once thought I did know all about it
Since the rain falls, the wind blows and the sun shines
Don't you know that your creator is a'running out of ideas?

I know that I might die from poison
Invisible hanging there in the sunlight
And don't you know that your creator is a'running out of ideas?
If I was you I'd be friendly to your neighbour

Be glad that he don't want to be your enemy
For don't you know that your creator is a'running out of ideas?

Overall Meaning

The song "Poison" by Bert Jansch speaks to the fragility of life and the uncertainty of the future. The first verse suggests a sense of complacency - the singer once thought they knew everything there was to know. However, the following lines point to the uncontrollable forces of nature and the possibility that there is more to life than the singer previously understood. The repetition of the phrase "don't you know that your creator is a'running out of ideas?" reflects a sense of disillusionment and doubt about the stability of the world and the future.

The second verse takes a more personal turn, with the singer acknowledging the possibility of dying from poison that cannot be seen. This line reflects the potential dangers and unpredictability of life, and how everything can change in an instant. The final verse serves as a warning or advice - the singer suggests being friendly to one's neighbour and avoiding enmity, as though anticipating that difficult times may lie ahead. Overall, the song is a reflection on the transience of life and the need to remain adaptable and vigilant as events unfold.

Nobody could get that really creepy, eerie, gothic sound out of an acoustic like Bert. An off the wall genius.

Erm, are we forgetting the greatest singer songwriter of all time - Townes (the King!) Van Zandt?!?

@mutorsound

The drumming on this tune is absolutely wicked. Great tune all around but damn does that groove slay everything within a 5 mile radius when it gets going.
