She Moved Through the Fair
Bert Jansch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My young love said to me,
My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you
For your lack of kind.
She stepped away from me
And this she did say,
"It will not be long love
Till our wedding day".

She stepped away from me
And she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her move here
And move there.
And she went her way homeward
With one star awake,
As the swan in the evening
Moved over the lake.

Last night she came to me,
My young love came in.
So softly she entered,
That her feet made no din.
And she came close beside me
And this she did say,

"It will not be long love
Till our wedding day".

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bert Jansch's song "She Moved Through the Fair" tell a story of love and loss. The first verse sets the scene of a young couple in love, with the singer's love reassuring him that her parents will accept him despite his lack of wealth or social status. She then steps away and tells him that it won't be long until their wedding day.

The second verse captures the beauty of the woman as she moves through a fair, catching the eye of the singer who watches fondly as she moves about. She then heads home, with only one star awake, resembling a swan moving over the lake.

The third and final verse is where the sadness and heartbreak of the song come in. The woman returns to the singer, but this time as a ghostly apparition, reminding him that their wedding day won't be far off. The gentle and ghostly nature of her visit hints at the possibility that she has passed away, leaving the singer yearning for their lost love.

Overall, the song captures the beauty and tragedy of love and loss, telling a poignant story through its lyrics and melody.

Such a great tune - that descending pattern on the C chord is really haunting (appropriately!) and was used by Bert in several songs.

Bah. I'm from Sheffield and would have been here had I discovered this man's music earlier. Rest in peace.

@PaulMaripaul

What a fine version of this old classic, what a loss Bert is to the folk blues scene.

Damn I really miss Bert. Such inspiring picking and what a beautifully haunting voice. I stumbled across a Pentagle LP at the local library in South Bend, In as an adolescent in the 60's. My love of Celtic music was spawned.

As a high schooler in 1970 I happened to hear Pentangle on the "underground" FM station in Phoenix, AZ. Haven't stopped listening or collecting.

@jimmurphy4083

The best version I have every heard, beautiful.

I feel deep admiration for that way of playing acoustic guitar. Bert was one of the best.
