He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and studied at the School of Music there. A multi-instrumentalist, he was hired by Hans Busch to play with his orchestra before serving as a bandsman in the German Navy during World War II. He later formed his own big band, toured with them, then worked as an arranger and producer, making hit records with Freddy Quinn and Ivo Robic. In 1961, he hired The Beatles to back Tony Sheridan on "My Bonnie (Lies Over the Ocean)," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Ain't She Sweet" and "Cry for a Shadow," in a session for Polydor. These turned out to be the Beatles' first commercial recordings. When Beatles manager Brian Epstein asked Kaempfert about further promoting The Beatles, Kaempfert informed Epstein that the company was only interested in The Beatles as Tony Sheridan's backup group. (It also turned out British Decca executive Dick Rowe turned them down in favor of local beat combo Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.) He then released The Beatles from their contract with Polydor.

Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
I know it drives you crazy
When I pretend you don't exist
When I'd like to lean in close
And run my hands against your lipsThough we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
I know you see me see you
As you see me walk on past
When there's nothing more I'd like to do
Then come in close and hear you laugh
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Yea whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Hmm whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
The lyrics of Bert Kaempfert's "Whispering" tell the story of two strangers who catch each other's eye and feel a connection, yet are too nervous to approach each other. The singer, who is addressing the woman, tells her not to worry that he is looking at her, acknowledging that she is gorgeous and dressed in blue. He admits that he drives her crazy when he pretends not to notice her, when in reality he wants to lean in close and run his hands against her lips. He senses there is a rapport between them, even though they haven't spoken yet, and asks her to whisper her number so he can call her at home.
The song portrays the thrill and hesitation of a budding romance, capturing the feeling of wanting to connect with someone but not knowing how to take the first step. The singer acknowledges his own nervousness and feels a connection with the woman, even though they have only exchanged fleeting glances. The repetition of "whisper me your number" adds to the intimacy of the moment, as he asks her to reveal something personal and private.
Overall, "Whispering" is a gentle, romantic song that captures the nervous energy of new love, We see a sense of admiration and perhaps even love behind the lyrics, as the man tries to express his fondness for the woman in his own hesitant way.
