Sun Was High
Best Coast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went for a walk
Watched the cars go by
The sun was high
I thought of you

I went for a walk
The moon was glowin'
It sure was high
I thought of you

I went for a walk
Watched the cars go by
The sun was high

And so was I
I thought of you

Overall Meaning

The above lyrics are from the song "Sun Was High" by the indie rock band Best Coast. The lyrics depict a person who takes a walk and sees the cars go by, while the sun is high. During this time, the person reflects on a past relationship and thinks of their significant other. The repetitive nature of the lyrics symbolizes the cyclical nature of life, where experiences and thoughts keep coming back.

The song beautifully captures the melancholy feeling of nostalgia and longing for someone who was once an integral part of our lives. The image of watching the cars go by also suggests that life goes on, even after a relationship ends. The use of “sun” and “moon” in alternate stanzas symbolizes the passage of time and how memories stay with us across all dimensions of time.

I remember my cousin playing this song in the car when I was a teenager. At first I was confused because all I listened to was hip hop up until that point. Growing up in the hood, it wasn’t “cool” to listen to this type of music. And my cousin was a hipster so he didn’t give a fuck about what people thought lol. Anyway, when he was playing this song at first I was laughing at him (me being a immature teenager), but something clicked in my brain, I felt something in my soul from hearing this song. He had all the windows down, it was a summer night in the city, and he was blasting this song without a care in the world, singing it word for word. All eyes were on us, and he just didn’t care. It was that level of confidence right there that would go on to change not only my music taste, but my life. It taught me a valuable lesson in life, that lesson is to not give a fuck about what people think about you. To just be yourself! Be different! He doesn’t even know this story, and we barely talk now, but man I wish he knew! This song will forever be legendary to me!
