I highly doubt he could have "won". I mean, he might have won in Europe but do you imagine him stopping there? I don't see any successful conclusion without him eventually fighting Russia, Japan and the US. He was too much of a megalomaniac. Now maybe if he took them on one at a time, but eventually any remaining powers have to recognize he will break his word to anyone as soon as it suits him to do so. So whatever powers remain would ultimately join forces if for no other reason than to defeat him.

Yes, he probably could've won against the British by forcing them into a stalemate after winning in North Africa. No, he could not invade the UK, please don't bring that up.
But if there was only a victory in the West then would it really be a world war. And also, who's to say that Russia wouldn't eventually attack Germany at one point.

In the same year, the Munich Agreement was signed between Great Britain and Germany, in which Great Britain allowed Germany to seize part of Czechoslovakia. In the 1935 Naval Pact, Britain allowed Germany to take back its navy. We should also not forget about the "pact of four" in 1933 between Germany, Italy, Great Britain and France. These countries wanted to subjugate the whole of Europe to their hegemony. If you're a Westerner, I wouldn't be surprised if you're hearing all this for the first time...

The other reason he lost in North Africa was the fact the British cracked the enigma code and would sabotage some of their shipments. They didn’t destroy all of them because they didn’t want the Germans to figure this out. They sabotaged shipments mostly from the Italian peninsula to make it look like someone in Italy was helping the Allies. This created even more distrust between the Germans and Italians.

The fact that Germany was only a nation of 80 million (including Austria and Bohemia/Moravia) against the USSR (194 Million), USA (132 million) and Great Britain (44.7 million) Germany was horrendously outnumbered. Doesn't help them either that the main Allies were all world spanning super states while Germany was restricted in Central Europe. The Allies also had the advantage of defending all the resources Germany desperately needed to conquer just to sustain the war.

Same thing is true today for China and Russia.
All Russian manufacturing is in the west close to Europe and Chinese manufacturing is on their east coast vulnerable to sea attacks by subs, while the US has infrastructure throughout the country making manufacturing possible on both coasts and the middle.

You could write a whole book about all the reasons he lost the war. Part of it was the same reason the Confederacy lost the Civil War - lack of fuel, lack of metal, lack of food, and lack of men. Then he fought a war on four fronts. Then he underestimated the strength of the British, Soviets, and the USA. Then there was his invasion of Russia, which is because of a mistake he made as a boy - he played hooky on the day his teacher discussed Napoleon.

Underestimated? Only in the West. All over the rest of the world, people know that the USSR destroyed 6 times more Nazis than the USA, Great Britain, France and the rest of the allies combined and 80% of the Wehrmacht's losses were on the eastern front. And also that Lend Lease was only 14% of the Soviet army according to the HIGHEST estimates.

@Anonymous Depends on how see the numbers. 140,000 trucks, millions of tons and fuel and most importantly, food, was crucial. It's pretty accepted here that the closes Russia came to collapse, was 42-43. Zhukov was requesting a second front in 43, but then changed his mind when he found out, that means no more lend lease.

The pendulum they used on maps of the Atlantic to find ships was pretty accurate. The allies were trying to figure out how the Germans kept finding their ships. I believe through spies they found out and started using the practice themselves.

One big reason the USA had such a significantly stronger industrial capacity than the other major players in the war was that the USA was across the world. The UK, France, Russia, Italy, and Austria were continuously bombed throughout the war, with industrial centers being of particular interest for strategic bombings. This caused all major powers to continuously lose production capacity while the USA never had this concern and could focus solely on production and not rebuilding.

It’s most likely Rommel did it mostly to protect his family. Rommel probably wouldn’t have done it otherwise given a trial would be a huge problem.

I majored in history in college and the most I've ever read is Rommel said he would avail himself to the new government. He knew it was going to happen but yes he talked to his son before he was taken away in a staff car. Patton was furious when he was told the truth and he made sure the family was taken care of. The germans didnt try to secure leningrad. They wanted to completely raze the city since it was the center of global communism at the time. Thats why its called "the siege of leningrad" and not "the battle of leningrad".

The odds of germany achieving a quick victory in russia were still relatively high until the soviet counter offensive in the winter. And the war was still very much winable when germsn forces were sent into the caucasus.

The german offensive in russia was only lost after the battle of kursk. That was when germany lost most of its armored units.

They were never high. the only way Germany could have achieced a quick victory against Russia is if they surrender. They could not have gained Moscow due to not doing Halders strategy, Stalingrad was virtually unwinnable even if Germany had more men there. Germany NEVER could have even made a victory, let alone a quick one against the soviets. Kursk was unwinnable too due to the Soviets having 5 times as many soldiers and good fortifications, and Germany usually only won battles against the soviets when they werent ready, but at Kursk they were. Germany was doomed

Some histirians say turning point was as early as August 41. The Russian resistance was much more than was anticipated and the Germans were starting to fall behind schedule. Definitely by the start of Kursk there was no way German was going to defeat the Soviet Union.

Major factor on why he ACTUALLY lost is that soviet union was easily able to replenish their manpower while germany was not, then germany was spread even thinner when allies invaded in the west, germany had 3 million at the start of barbarossa, soviets also had similar numbers, but the difference was that soviet numbers were only going up, while germany's numbers were only going down.

The Germans actually did have thick great winter coats stock piled in Warsaw and Prague warehouses , They waited until the weather got bad first because the coats were thick, stiff and hot you cant give soldiers these coats in June ,, it was more a logistic problem cause they needed not only coats but amunition, food, and truck and armor parts so getting the Germans winter gear took longer than expected

I would say Hitler's obsession with the Occult was a factor in him losing the war. But I don't think it was the single biggest factor. I think him declaring war on the US and invading the Soviet Union rank much higher than most people think.

It seems he became so confident because of his easy victories over Poland , France and others and because he actually wiped out the entire western Russian army down to less than 600 tanks in Moscow, destroyed the entire Russian airforce and it's economy all within 3 months.
Japan had alot of success at that time as well so he probably assumed Japan could hold off the US long enough for him to finish Russia.
He did not see lend lease helping Russia rebiuld so many army's and tanks.
Then the Germany first policy began to wipe out the German economy hammering oil supplies and resources..
Then the US landing an entire army in Africa during Stalingrad didn't help much.

My grandfather, Norman Douglas Smith, was a cargo pilot for World War II during the clash with Japan and he lived till his 80s before his death. Last time I saw him while he was close to being on a deathbed, I was 21 and I did attend his funeral the following year. Kudos to such a wonderful grandparent.

Rommel is a very over rated general he was a good front line commander i ww1 and a good tank commander in the invasion of france but he hade a very big ego and saw him self as the greatest commander in the world he underestameted the britsh and he over estameted his own forces capablitis and made alot if big mistakes that cost him the african campaine

He opposed his generals because they suggested to him bombing civilians like the British and US were doing. He kept them from doing so for three months while German citizens were being slaughtered by the bombings.

He opposed his generals because they wanted to finish off the 200,000 British soldiers they had trapped in Dunkirk. He done so as a gesture of peace, showing it was still on the table, even after his 24+ peace offers he gave Britain pre-war and during the war.

@Michael Williamson I do believe that's probably what happened at Dunkirk although it's not actually known but evidence also suggested he was relying on Herman Goering to finish them off by air power but the British RAF appeared at that time and should have given them a clue of what could happen in the air war to come. Almost EVERYTIME Herman Goering was responsible for a mission he failed miserable.

When the Germans were going to attack Poland, the Soviets and Germans were allies right?. Soviets attacked Poland from the east and Germans from west, then for some reason he broke their pact or something and started invading the ussr. So if he didn't try to invade Soviets now the world might have been like dominated by German or Russian languages 😂😅

Stalin broke their pact by expanding West and invading weakened states which was not allowed under the non-aggression pact.
1) 30 November 1929 - Finland is attacked.
2) 21 Februrary 1940 - Sweden is bombed.
3) 18 June 1940 - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are invaded.

Sad but true. Once the Russians reached Berlin and the German soldiers knew it was over, most of them made a break for the west to surrender to the Allies rather than get captured by the Russians.

Germany lost because the allies had more of everything. More men, more weapons and more oil. The allies didn't so much win the war on the battle field as in american factories. Once the US industry was on a war footing, the sheer volume of production was stupendous. Also, neither the german military nor industry was set up to fight a war of attrition.

I respectfully disagree. The US Army activated all National Guard and Reserve units after the fall of France. Intensive training was initiated and men who could lead were sent to officer and NCO training programs. In early Pacific Battles mostly prewar us troops usually out fought the Japanese.

The overwhelming majority of this was from 1944-1945. Literally 80%. The USSR had strategically defeated the Axis by 1943. American mechanization helped speed up soviet tempo in the late war, but did not change the ultimate outcome.

Another problem with Rommel was hygiene. Rommel was the Desert Fox and moved quickly vs Montgomery whom, upon stopping, would mandate latrines be dug deep, separated from housing by a good distance and mandatory hand washing. Monti was very pro hygiene and Rommel was no where near as careful. This resulted in Rommel getting dysentery frequently. Happy thoughts! 😎

Let alone armies, civilizations need food, water, resources, etc. to sustain... These dictators, by nature, do not care for this.

If there is something i have learned from this, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and the war in Ukraine is that certain political leaders tend to have such a romanticized view of past history that when they try to make military decisions they have no business in they tend to base their strategy on on blitzing their way across land with overwhelming power like how leaders of ancient past did no matter how much military tactics and war operations have changed overtime and how they have such little understanding of wars yet think they know everything thanks to their overbearing egos.

They forget that this isn't the ancient world or the medieval era where most soldiers used swords and shields, some being archers and others cavalry, now EVERYONE uses guns, tanks, helicopters and other missile weapons that requires a great amount of ammunition and fuel to be efficient and without great planning they won't be able to function properly and as such hindering invasions. It also doesn't help that with how the use of weapons have advanced and changed over time so has military tactics and strategies as well to adapt to changing times and to not recognize that will lead to great failure.

Germany had their own resources and their own citizens contributed to their war effort. The Allied powers are the ones who had such an agreement with the Soviets.

Yes, Soviet Union did indeed sign a non-aggression pact with Germany. They, however, are the ones who violated the pact by the act of invading Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

yea well, yes and no, you can't say that because of an hoi4 timelapse but i agree with you, historically the uk was foundamental to defeat germany (i would say it was their war by the way, allies were a franco-british alliance so yea, america and ussr joined later) but do not forget that if it was for only one of them against single germany, germany would have won. ussr (with no foreign intervention) vs germany, germany wins, uk alone vs germany, seems hard to me germany would manage to land in britain since the royal navy was stronger than ever at the time but in the long term possible, usa vs germany alone well maybe a stalemate? since they're on the atlantic, well, germany was surely technological advanced but not that much to invade such a far country divided by the ocean. remember germany lost after 6 years of fightings against three superpowers with all their puppets/minor allies, civil resistance like partisans and revolts in occupied countries and well, weak allies or allies who didn't care about helping germany at all as long they would help them to achieve their own goals (cough cough italy) or allies too far away to help them like japan. also, germany went out of oil around 1944 and italy surrendered to the allies in 1943, with no more civilian support to the axis, plus they wasted a lot of men in camps who did terrible things to poor people (yk why i don't support the ideology, i don't need to tell you the reason) and the german air forces were used with no common sense in britain, bombing civilian cities instead of military interests, maybe and i say maybe, in a different scenario with a bit better organized italy (cuz their military wasn't the best, but still it was good, just the generals were choosen by the leader not based on their might but common interests or corruption call it what you like,) a less crazy japan not attacking america and helping against russia, and a more strategic rather than aggressive germany, things would have went way different than in our world, you choose if it would be better or worse. thanks for your attention.

actually barbarossa wasn't a mistake because if he hadn't done it USSR would've attacked germany because the non agression pact was tecnically whoever is ready first strikes and during barbarossa he found soviet troops on attacking positions the reason why barbarossa failed was that he had focused on the petrol in caucase instead of going to moscow because as stalin was incredibely impopular at the time the fall of moscow would've meant the end of stalin and the end of USSR so he should have concentrated all his forces to take Moscow and not divide them.
