Diamonds
Beth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone.

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds, ah, ah

Follow her down to a bridge by the fountain
where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high.

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone.

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,

Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Overall Meaning

The above lyrics are from The Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" which was released in 1967. The song starts off with an unusual setting where the listener is asked to picture themselves in a boat on a river, surrounded by tangerine trees and marmalade skies. As the song progresses, the listener is introduced to a girl with kaleidoscope eyes who is seen amongst cellophane flowers of yellow and green towering over their head. The lyrics then shift to the chorus, where the girl is referred to as Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

As the song continues further, the singer encourages the listener to follow Lucy to a bridge by the fountain, where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies. The imagery depicted in the song is surreal but also pretty, and everyone smiles as the listener drifts past the incredibly high flowers. The lyrics then take the listener to the shore where newspaper taxis appear, waiting to take them away. Once the listener climbs in the back of the taxi with their head in the clouds, they're gone.

Finally, towards the end of the song, the listener is asked to picture themselves on a train in a station, where plasticine porters with looking glass ties can be seen. Then suddenly, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes appears at the turnstile. The song ends on this note, leaving the listener with an image of this magical girl, who they have been following throughout the song.
