I Could Be the One
Beth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were strangers but it's strange how
Well I thought I knew you
It was raining at the station
You picked me up around two
You bought me milky coffee
Were nice to the waiter
Damn that got me
Hating the way you came in
And started something that I can't undo
Singing your name like a slow jam
Thought it was fate til it crashed down
It's not like me to get carried away
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Now I'm just sick of them
Thinking what could've been
Should've been every time I hear one
We were almost timeless
Now I'm hitting rewind and beginning again
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Almost mine for a while till
You found something "better"
Does she like the way you lied
Well I hope you're happy together
This time it really got me
So I'm throwing out all the books you bought me
Hated the way you made me
Think I could never live without you
Stuck in my head and you go round
Thought it was fate but I know now
It's on you
Yeah don't you think it's kind of a waste
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Now I'm just sick of them
Thinking what could've been
Should've been every time I hear one
We were almost timeless
Now I'm hitting rewind and beginning again
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Like Whitney and Mariah
Full strings and a choir
Celine and Shania
The kind where you already know every line
We could've been an anthem
We'd sing it in the car
Wouldn't need the radio
When we're dancing in the dark
Guess you never heard it
Or it wasn't your style
Now I'm back where I started
Trying to figure out why
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Now I'm just sick of them
Thinking what could've been
Should've been every time I hear one
We were almost timeless
Now I'm hitting rewind and beginning again
I thought this would be
It could be it could be
You and me
We could be a love song
Like Whitney and Mariah
Full strings and a choir
Celine and Shania
The kind where you already know every line
We were almost timeless
Now I'm hitting rewind and beginning again
I thought this would be
It could be it could be

You and me
We could be a love song

Overall Meaning

The song "I Could Be The One" by Beth talks about a failed romance that could have been like the famous love songs of the past. The song is about two people who meet and fall in love quickly but then drift apart just as fast. They had the potential to be a great love song, like the classics sung by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain. However, the relationship ended, and the singer is left with a feeling of disappointment and resentment.

The first verse of the song starts with the singer recalling how the two of them met at a train station. They were strangers then, but it's odd how she thought she knew him already. The next lines describe how he made a good first impression by buying her coffee and being nice to the waiter. However, it was his charm and charisma that got her hooked, and she hates how he started something that she can't undo. She thought it was fate that brought them together, singing his name like a slow jam. But eventually, it all came crashing down.

In the second verse, the singer talks about how they almost had a timeless love, just like the famous duets of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She visualizes them singing a love song in the car and dancing in the dark without needing the radio. But it wasn't meant to be, and her ex-boyfriend found someone "better" than her. The singer is bitter and pained, throwing out all the books he bought her. She's back to where she started, thinking about what could've been and should've been if only things had worked out.

"Some say he failed to stay on the road the second he spotted her, apparently his mind were too busy with fighting off her stunning beauty, just to find himself totally lost in her appearance and he had to admit his defeat" Just wow, you have talent! And you have my attention... even if you weren't a singer, you would still make me curious! I'm currently remixing the original now and I'm excited to see how it'll turn out eventually. You did really well with this one, keep it up :)
