Somebody That I Used to Know
Beth Lyrics

Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it′s an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn′t have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don′t need that though
Now you′re just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you′re just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don′t wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
But you didn′t have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don′t need that though
Now you′re just somebody that I used to know
The lyrics to the song "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Beth explore the complex emotions that arise when a relationship ends. The singer reflects on a past relationship, thinking back to when they were happy together but also acknowledging the loneliness they felt when they were with their partner. The line "That was love and it's an ache I still remember" conveys the idea that even though the relationship is over, the pain of the breakup still lingers.
The song also touches on the idea of addiction to sadness. The singer acknowledges that it's possible to become addicted to feeling sad and resigned, even though it's not a healthy way to live. The line "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness" suggests that the singer is aware of this tendency and is struggling to break free from it.
The chorus of the song is where the singer confronts their former partner, expressing hurt and frustration at how they were treated after the breakup. They feel cut off and rejected, as if their former partner has erased them from their life completely. Despite the pain, the singer ultimately decides that they don't need their ex in their life anymore, concluding with the repeated phrase "Now you're just somebody that I used to know."
