Good As It Gets
Beth Hart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't got style like a magazine-no my shoes don't shine
Ain't got pride like a beauty queen-can't even walk a straight line
Somebody say the best things in life are on the inside
Say my name, all my love's in vain, in the welfare line

Nobody told me there'd be days like these
There's gotta be somethin' more than misery
It's the salt that stings

[Chorus:]

As Good As it Gets
I want the sunshine, champagne all the time
I'll live on Wine and Roses, so hold me closer
Untill I break a Sweat, it ain't
As Good As it Gets

Workin' on dreams, call 'em "Jelly Beans"
They make me laugh out loud
When the crowd screams-it is good indeed
And makes my mamma proud
Somebody say the best things in life, get em while you can
Say my name I think it is gonna rain-I got to find my man

Nobody told me where the sun's gonna shine
Heaven is only when the good's inside-right before I die

[Chorus: Repeat]

I wanna break out-wanna break out-won't you let me in
Wanna make out-wanna make out-fill my cup again

To the fucking rim
As Good As it Gets

Overall Meaning

The song "Good As It Gets" by Beth Hart explores the theme of longing for the best things in life that seem out of reach. The first verse talks about not measuring up to beauty standards – the singer doesn't have the shoes or pride of a magazine model or beauty queen. However, she does believe that the best things are on the inside, but even though she gives all her love, it's in vain and she's left in the welfare line. She wonders why nobody told her that there would be days like these and dreams of a life filled with sunshine, champagne, and wine and roses.

The chorus emphasizes the chorus's desire to exceed present circumstances and live the best life possible, even if it means breaking a sweat or going to the point of no return. The second verse highlights the singer's resilience as she works on her dreams, also known as "jelly beans," laughing out loud even when the crowd screams in approval. She believes the best things in life are to be enjoyed while we still can, anticipating rain to come and seeking help from her partner, which invokes a sense of dependence.

Overall, "Good As It Gets" talks about the universal human desire to seek the best things in life and how hard it can be to achieve them. It also acknowledges the bitter-sweet and elusive nature of happiness and the struggle to maintain it once attained.

I love this woman. She's got such a beautiful spirit, it's a pleasure watching her light shine. She's quite the beauty, too. But it's her personality that defines her. She also plays the hell out of that piano.

You know, I wonder if she ever gets on the internet to discover what people are saying about her. People love her, have a special relationship with her, and I hope she feels it. I remember a couple of years ago, long after she'd been around and other people knew of her (I think I might have seen her on VH1, on that live rock show they had), I found one of her earlier concert videos, and I was thunderstruck at how passionate her performance was. At that time, she was clearly enjoying life whatever way she could, and some if it, I learned, would later drag her down. Ignoring that for the moment--she recovered nicely--I sent a link to my brother to this same concert, and I said, "She's the real deal." I mean, she was emotionally invested in her performance. She's a great human being, and when I look at her, I think something about her that's almost religious. I can't quite put it into words. I know I'm only seeing a tiny segment of her life, and I might be glamorizing her. But she's special, unique.

And so I can enjoy the whole show, I'm going to buy that video of this concert.

I will never forget when I saw her first time. In Borderline. A small venue and I was 3 metres from her. Amazing performance and a big surprise within the audience. It was Jeff Beck. I'm still getting goosebumps when I look back.

@andymadder2378

Sat 20 feet from Beth (left of piano) for this show, stunning vocal performance and gushing appreciation at playing the iconic Royal Albert Hall from this amazingly talented lady. So glad i was there. (side note: 2 best shows this year were at the R A H. Beth Hart and the other Alter Bridge with full orchestra)
