Distance
Bette Midler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the voice of hope
It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man

From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns, no bombs and no disease
No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
What all this fightings for
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man
It's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
This is the song for every man

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

God is watching us

God is watching
God is watching us from a distance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bette Midler's "From A Distance" evoke thoughts of hope, peace, and harmony as it describes the world from a distance. This song discusses the idea of how when we view the world from afar, everything seems perfect, without any wars, hunger, poverty, or disease. It speaks about how love and hope unite everyone and how every person, no matter where they are from or who they are, has a vital role to play in creating a better world. The verses also reflect on the concept of how God is continuously watching over us from afar, the protector and the guide, urging us to remember the need for harmony and love.

The melody and the lyrics' powerful intent make "From A Distance" an anthem for peace, which people of every age can relate to. Lines like "no hungry mouths to feed," highlight the need to address poverty and hunger in the world, with a desire for everyone to work together towards eradicating such issues. Moreover, the song's call for a better understanding of our shared humanity and the collective need for a peaceful world still feels relevant and necessary today.

I love this song. Every now and then throughout the years I'm reminded by the words "From a distance" that someone speaks in an Innocent unrelated comment.

I'm so glad I was a teenager when this came out. I loved Bette Midler in many 80's and 90's films. So this song has meant many different things to me at many different times over the years. As a teenager I never truly believed in much of anything, over the years I have, like so many, gone on my own spiritual journey. So many different versions of self over the years, listening to this song and listening to the words "God is watching Us".

Now it makes me feel happy and sad that so many of it's words are so poignant at such a historical time. Most of us have been blind to the needs of so many, not really comprehending the reality of desperation.

Thankfully it seems that this time there appears to be a great awakening from many across the globe to the realities of war and famine, natural and man-made disaster, ill health in its many forms and the appearance of an inane greed which puts our economies over that of our fellow men and women.

I wish we could change out path for a better one. 🙏

Yes. I have no clue why this song popped up in my Playlist. My mother used to sing this song all the time. She's been gone just over a year now and it's crazy how something as simple as a song can make you feel like they are right there in the room with you again.
