I Shall Be Released
Bette Midler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say everything can be replaced
That every distance is not near
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here

They say every woman needs protection
Then they turn around and tell you
Every woman's got to fall
I swear, I see my own reflection
Somewhere far beyond this wall

I see my life come shining
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

Now, yonder stands there in that lonely crowd
A man who swears he is not to blame, no, no
And if you ask him has he ever seen this lonely woman?
He'll tell you, "No, no, no"
What's more, he does not know my name

But I see my light come shining
Shining, shining, shining from the west
Straight on down to the east
Ah, any day now, any, any old day now
I am going to, I am going to be released, yeah

They tell ya, they tell ya every woman
They tell ya every woman got to have protection
Then they turn around and tell ya
"No, we gonna make that a woman fall"
Oh, god, I swear, I swear I see
I see my, my very own reflection
Far and away beyond, way, way beyond these four walls

That's right, I see, I see my life, my life
My life is shining, shining, shining
Shining, shining, shining, shining
From the west straight on down to the east
And any day now, do you hear me?
Any day now, I shall be, I am going to be released

Any day now, any day now, any day now
Any, any day now, oh, any day now
Any day, any day, any day
Any day, any day, any day
Woah, any day, any day, any old day now
Yeah, any day now, I am going to, I shall be released

Woah, any day now, I shall see again
Any day now, I shall be free again
Any day now, they'll let me be again
Oh, any day now, any day now, any day now

Whoa, help me, any day, any day
Any old day now

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "I Shall be Released" speaks about how everything in life is replaceable, but the memories of all those who have wronged the singer remain etched in their mind. Every face of every person who contributed to the singer's predicament reminds them of their captivity, and they simply cannot forget anything. The second verse emphasizes the double standards of society towards women. They say women require protection, but at the same time, they make them fall. Despite being confined, the singer sees a reflection of their life beyond the walls, shining from east to west.

In the third verse, the focus shifts to a man who claims that he is not to blame and has no idea about the woman's confinement. The woman sees her life shining far beyond the wall and believes that her case is beyond his understanding. The last verse is an extension of the third one - the singer repeats the phrase "any day now" multiple times, expressing their hope and desire to be free again.

Overall, "I Shall be Released" is a song about imprisonment, confinement, hope, and freedom. The lyrics imply that despite everything negative in life, there is always a silver lining, and we must keep on hoping for the best.

She sings with beautiful passion and love in her heart. She's truly Divine ❤️

Scottie Lover

The lady can sing. Puts her voice, heart and soul into her music. Was lucky to see The Divine Miss M twice (close to the stage), she puts on a great show. I still have "Mud Will Be Flung Tonight" in my car, throw it in when I need a pick me up. She is definitely one of a kind.

Lisa

Have loved this beautiful human being since the late 70's. She's a treasure, 1 and only. Saw her live in the early 2000's & she gives everything. Grateful to still have her with us! ❤The Divine Miss M

I've only had the chance to see her once. Mud Will Be Flung is a hilarious act. I can recite it along with the track. I still listed from time to time! Why bother/

@Deborah HelvigAt her Madison Square Garden show a bunch of years ago, Bette joked: remember the old days when we were all taking drugs, and now, we're all taking medication? I am still scratching my head over the choice for her Broadway swan song; Hello, Dolly is a frivolous show made famous by the ancient (and brilliant) Carol Channing. It's a story about a withdrawn, aging, old widow. What in the world is our vivacious Divine One doing in such a vapid commercial enterprise? Well, she IS an old woman. And that's my distress. How could a Queen of my gay youth, who evolved into THE queen of my gay life, how can Bette be the same age as Old People?

Just think 5 years ago, she was in her mid 60s! WOW!
