The Glory of Love
Bette Midler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"This is a song I've been singing for a long time.
It's like an old friend.
But, you know, I think it,
it's only recently that I discovered what it's really about."

You've got to give a little, take a little,
and let your poor heart break a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to laugh a little, cry a little,
until the clouds roll by a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

As long as there's the two of us,
we've got the world and all it's charms.
And when the world is through with us,
we've got each other's arms.

You've got to win a little, lose a little,
yes, and always have the blues a little.

That's the story of, that's the glory of love.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

Overall Meaning

Bette Midler's "The Glory of Love" is a sweet and romantic song about the ups and downs of love. The verses of the song discuss the need to give and take in a relationship, as well as the importance of being able to show vulnerability and let one's heart break. Through this, the lyrics suggest that these experiences are part of the journey of love and contribute to its beauty or "glory."

The song's chorus emphasizes the idea that love is about both joy and pain- to truly experience love, you must be willing to laugh and cry, to win and lose, and to go through the good times and the bad. The final lines of the song speak to the strength and comfort that can be found in a lasting love, even when the rest of the world seems to fade away.

My sister and I watched this movie together all the time. She was 16 years older than me. This was our movie and forever young was our song. I miss you and love you sis!

My Mom loved this song and I sang it to her on her deathbed. I know she heard me. Love you Mom, wherever you are.

So sweet. I was blessed with being able to take care of my beautiful Momma in her last days and there with my family as she took her last breath. I so miss her but am thankful that I was there. I played music for her as well. So glad she had Jesus with her then and now for eternity.

I love how her style of singing the song changes over time, from childish bouncy, to loud theatre and finally as she her self has loved, been loved, lost love she ends up singing the song with so much tenderness and experience.
