Wind Beneath My Wings
Bette Midler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that's your way
You always walked a step behind

So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Did you ever know that you're my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings

It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it
I would be nothing without you

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be
I could fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings

Oh, the wind beneath my wings
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings
Fly, fly, fly away, you let me fly so high
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky
So high I almost touch the sky

Thank you, thank you
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings

Overall Meaning

The song "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler is a tribute to a person who has always been by your side, helping you in all walks of life. The singer thanks this person for everything they have done for her, acknowledging that their support has allowed her to achieve success. The lyrics are an ode to this unsung hero who has always been content to let the singer shine in the spotlight. The song suggests that the person who is always standing in the background, keeping things together, has just as important a role to play as the person in the foreground.

The first stanza of the song describes the person who has been the constant support of the singer as someone who has always been content to stay behind and let the singer shine. The second stanza describes the singer as the one who has received all the glory while the unsung hero has had to keep her emotions hidden behind a beautiful smile. The chorus acknowledges the unsung hero as the singer's 'hero' and the one who has made it possible for her to soar high like an eagle. The final stanza is a reaffirmation and recognition of the unsung hero as the wind beneath the singer’s wings, without whom she would be nothing.

My mum passed away 25th Feb. Her funeral will be Thursday 5th March and this is the song I have chosen to say goodbye to her. She was my heroine and I know we both knew how we felt about each other. Unconditional love both ways. Mum had dementia and it was very painful to lose her to this horrible condition.

Thank you Bette Midler for being a part of my life since around '77/78 when I first heard your voice. And for giving me and the world this beautiful song.

This poem will be read at Mum's funeral.

God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, ‘Peace be Thine’.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

I'm here bc I was wondering who might someone feel this way about, I was thinking my son may feel this way about Mr but I couldn't think of who I could relate it to, so I checked the comments and the reason I can't think of relating maybe is because I'm actually better off without my mother's hate and sabotage, would this book be helpful for working out that issue?
