At the Stars
Better Than Ezra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe I should drop you at your door.
Or leave tonight and vanish up the shore.
Anywhere but here.

It's three o'clock we're driving in your car,
You're screaming out the window at the stars,
"Please don't drive me home!"
Blame us because we are who we are.
Hate us because you'll never get that far.
And who'd suppose you would go?
I've already learned enough to know.

Tell me all the places we could go.
And count the headlights passing on the road,
A long, long time ago.

Here we are.
Foreign to their world.
Straight and composed.
Your sermons I can do without
And I finally found.
That everybody loves to love you
When you're far away.

Could it be we've done something wrong
We'd make it back to your place before dawn

"Please, don't take me home."
"Please, don't take me home."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Better Than Ezra's song At the Stars are open to interpretation, but it seems to be about two people who are in a relationship that is coming to an end. The singer seems to be contemplating leaving the other person, and is trying to find a way to do so without hurting them. The line "Maybe I should drop you at your door / Or leave tonight and vanish up the shore / Anywhere but here" suggests that the singer is considering different options for how to end the relationship, but is hesitant to hurt their partner's feelings.

The rest of the song deals with the conflicting emotions that the singer feels about the relationship. On the one hand, they seem to be frustrated with the other person's behavior, as seen in the line "Blame us because we are who we are / Hate us because you'll never get that far." However, there is also a sense of nostalgia and a desire to hold onto the good times, as seen in the lines "Tell me all the places we could go / And count the headlights passing on the road / A long, long time ago."

Overall, the song seems to be about the complicated emotions that come with the end of a relationship, and the difficulty of finding a way to part without hurting the other person.

I've already learned, I've already learned enough to know.

This is real music. I was around 19 when this came out. Music that you literally felt down in your bones. So relatable. I want my youth back.

I’m very nostalgic, myself. I feel you. I graduated HS in ‘94 and feel like and lucky to have caught the tail end of “the good old days”.

I was about thirty-five and it spoke to me then great arrangement and very cool vocals.

A little story about this song: this came out on the radio my freshman year of high school. I was having a really tough time. My best friend had moved away, and my other friends were kind of drifting away. The guy that I had a big crush on had been talking to me, but then started ignoring me suddenly. And then a group of boys just started relentlessly teasing me during gym class. Small things in retrospect, but soul crushing at the time.

Anyway, one friend invited me to go to a movie with her and some of her older cousins. This song played on the radio on the way there and back. The movie was terrible, but the outing and the companionship were so good and so necessary for me at the time. We spent the night at one of the cousins houses and I was invited to another outing the next weekend. And I remember thinking that if these older college girls liked me enough to invite me out again, then maybe I was worthwhile. It was an inroad to a new group of friends and a new lease on life. And it's just a damn beautiful song.

Glad to hear you made it through. Not all of us do and it's great to hear this song meant something to you as well.

The bass and drums in this song are extremely technical.  You do not find music like this written and played anymore.  BTE is an extremely underrated band, with minimal airplay on just a few hits.  But if you listen to their catalog, you appreciate the synergy of these guys.  From vocals, to rhythm, these guys are tight, and solid. Not that you need validation from Taylor Swift, but she was a huge fan of these guys prior to her hitting it big (and she covered "Breathless" by BTE at a charity event).See BTE playing live.  They are legit, and awesome.

Who could dislike this song...everybody loves you when you're far away.

Perhaps the best song from out of the nineties.

An underrated classic from an undeservedly underrated band.

Better Than Ezra was always an underrated band, glad I was around to enjoy their peak - tons of hits on the radio during the 90s. Fun days!
