Over You
Betty Buckley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Any fool can see that love is blind
Here I am to prove it one more time
Forget about my pride

I didn't mean to catch you by surprise
I hope that isn't pitty in your eyes
I tried so hard to stay away
And keep you of my mind
I know I should, but it´s no good
'Cause time goes by and I'm not over you

I'm gladly be a fool in love again
If there's a chance that you might see me,
Touch me, want me, ever need me
I'm still going crazy over you
And now I'm never gettin' over you

One more cup of coffee then I´ll go
But there's just one thing I thought you ought to know
The days goes by but nothing's changed
I'm still here for the taking
And just a touch would mean so much
To one whose heart is breaking over you

I'm gladly be a fool in love again
If there's a chance that you might see me
Touch me, want me,ever need me

I'm still going crazy over you
And now I'm never getting over you

Overall Meaning

"Over You" is a song by Betty Buckley which depicts a woman who is still in love with her ex and is struggling to move on. The opening lines of the song, "Any fool can see that love is blind, here I am to prove it one more time", establish that the singer is well-aware of her own naïveté and yet, is still going to succumb to the power of love. The song essentially talks about her feelings of heartbreak and her desire to be loved again.

As the song progresses, we learn that the singer has tried to stay away from her ex but hasn't been able to due to the lingering emotions she still has for him. She confesses that time has not healed her wounds and that she's still not over him, further emphasizing the theme of heartbreak. She longs for him to see her, touch her, want her, or even need her again. The line "And just a touch would mean so much, to one whose heart is breaking over you" is particularly poignant, as it conveys her vulnerability and yearning for her ex.

Overall, the song exquisitely portrays the difficulties of moving on from a broken relationship, and how the heartbreak can keep one trapped in a never-ending cycle of pain and longing.

Tender Mercies is such an amazing underrated movie. It may be too slow for some but I loved its message and acting from Duvall. Truly a hidden gem if you have the patience for something a little slower watch it! It’s amazing.

@susanpalmer255

Just watched it again last night. Much preferred her vocals in the movie.

@ImnotassweetasIusedtobe

She's at her best when she's relaxed and animated, and roars at certain parts, while also hitting those impossibly high notes and holding them. This is my favorite version of this - they should have had a full clip of her singing from the film as well. Instead they cut to James Caan walking around....no man is worth interrupting Betty Buckley for.

You're so right about the scene in Tender Mercies. It kills me each time I watch the film, and Betty's magnificence is so sadly interrupted.

@KansaiTeacher

Really? It is just be of the worst versions I have ever heard.

The version on the movie soundtrack is so much better.

This version is an imitation of a musical stage coach approach.

They way she talks much of the lyrics is terrible. And then she just shows of her voice on the rest. And it is horrid in my. I can understand why some may like that part but there is zero subtlety. She is a great singer. But there is a reason why she has never done particularly well outside of playing stage musical roles.

@KansaiTeacher

James Caan? And have zero recollection of him being in the movies. He doesn’t appear to be listed as one of the cast. Or are you talking of a stage version?

@ImnotassweetasIusedtobe

The movie OST version isn't her, it's Lane Brody for some reason....

@defcondylan8792

Robert Duvall was the actor who played Mac Sledge - not James Caan...

@snowflow07

People don’t realize what an amazing singer she is!!!

First time I heard this song on a jukebox I was so impressed. When I discovered it was Betty Buckley, the mom from "8 is enough", you could have blown me over with a feather! What Pipes! What Range! What a great, Super talented lady.
