Starting singing gospel with the family group, the Echoes of Joy, Wright began switching to R&B music in 1965 when she was only 11. In 1968, she released her first album, My First Time Around, at the age of 15, and scored her first hit, "Girls Can't Do What Guys Can Do".
It was not until the end of 1971 that Wright's most successful phase of her career took place. The song, "Clean Up Woman", became a Top 5 pop and R&B hit, and would later influence a remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" single with the sample of its guitar riffs; R&B girl group trio SWV's "I'm So Into You" also featured a sample from "Clean Up Woman", as did Afrika Bambaataa's song "Zulu War Chant". In 1974, Wright scored big with the songs "Tonight is the Night" (about a real-life love affair that happened with Wright when she was a teenager) and "Where is the Love" (which won her a Grammy for Best R&B Song).
After experiencing a brief slump in the early 1980s, she rebounded founding her own record label, Ms. B Records, and in 1988 made music history by being the first woman to have a gold record on her own label, with the release of Mother Wit, which featured two of her biggest hits in years, "No Pain (No Gain)" and the "After The Pain". On both songs, Wright displays her powerful upper register capabilities and five-octave range. In 1989, Wright released 4u2njoy which features the hit songs "From Pain To Joy", "Quiet Storm" and "Keep Love New". Her subsequent albums Passion and Compassion, B-Attitudes and Fit For A King kept her fanbase satisfied.
By 2001, a compilation album, The Very Best of Betty Wright, was released. In 2007, Wright scored her most successful single in over a decade with "Baby", a duet with fellow Soul singer, Angie Stone. The song peaked at #22 on the R&B chart and #2 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart.
Wright mentored several young singers, and did vocal production for the likes of Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Joss Stone.
In December 2010, Wright was given another Grammy Award nomination for the song, "Go", for the Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
In January 2011, Wright released her first album in ten years, Betty Wright: The Movie, and was credited to Betty Wright & The Roots .
On May 10, 2020, Wright sadly passed away due to cancer at age 66.

My baby and are back together again
Lovin' is better than it's ever been
If it weren't for the trials we've been through
I'd never have the courage to come back to you
We're all entitled to make a mistake
I as earnin' my man, while I was learnin' my man
Something you young girls might not understand
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain), no
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
There was an old lady sittin' under a tree
She called me over and she said to me
"My days left here may not be long
I wouldn't waste my time tellin' you nothin' wrong
But love is a flower that needs the sun and the rain
A little bit of pleasure's worth a whole lot of pain
If you learn this secret, how to forgive
A longer and better life you'll live'
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain), mmm
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
Anything worth havin' at all
Is worth workin' for and waitin' for
Some of my closest friends
Have thought they had their thing on a string
Just 'cause that man was bringin' 'em flowers and candy and all kinds of gifts
Mmm, mmm, honey
Some gifts are just to make him feel better while he's on his guilt trip
About the night before
You know what I mean
Especially when you know you haven't been doin' the things you should do
Think about it
What is the man tryin' to tell you
Sometimes flowers mean "Maybe we should just be friends'
Do you get my drift
Hang if you can hang
No pain, no gain
In order to get something
You got to give something
In order to be something
You got to go through something
Be a cook in the kitchen, a lady in the streets
You can't show your teeth to every guy you meet
It's alright to be a little sweet
But be a mama with the kids and you know what in the sheets
No pain (No pain)
No pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
See, you can't give up 'cause times get hard
It's just that old evil devil trying to keep us apart
Say devil you ain't getting nothin' here
I'm holding on to my man and have no fear
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain), oh
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
See you can't give up 'cause times get hard
It's just that old devil tryin' keep us apart
Say devil, you ain't got nothin' here
I'm holdin' to my man, and have no fear
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
No-no pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
Oh, no pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
No-no-no-no pain (No pain, no pain), no-no-no-no-no-no-no pain (No gain)
No-no pain, no-no pain (No pain), no-no pain (No pain), no pain (No gain), no pain
No pain (No pain, no pain, no gain)
In order to get something (No pain), give something (No pain)
To be something (No gain) you got to go through something
(No pain, no pain, no gain)
Oh...no pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
No-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no (No pain)
No-no-no-no (No pain, no gain)
No...no pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
You're really not to gain anything (No pain, no pain)
Without (No gain) goin' through some pain
No-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No-no (No gain)
(No pain, no pain, no gain)
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No pain (No gain), no gain, no pain, no gain
Get something (No pain, no pain)
You got to go through something (No gain)
No pain (No pain), no pain (No pain)
No gain (No gain)
Hear me when I say no pain, no gain (No pain), no pain, no gain (No pain)
No pain, no gain (No gain)
The song "No Pain" by Betty Wright is a soulful tune that encourages listeners to keep pushing through difficult times in order to reap the rewards in the end. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who has been through some hard times with her partner, but they have reconciled and are now stronger than ever. She sings about the importance of learning from mistakes, forgiving, and persevering through the pain to achieve something valuable. The song's catchy chorus emphasizes that there is no gain without some pain.
The lyrics also touch on the idea that sometimes material gifts - like flowers and candy - don't mean anything unless they are accompanied by true love and commitment. The singer recommends being both sweet and tough, being a good caregiver to children and to one's partner, and not giving up even when the going gets tough. Finally, she suggests that holding on to love despite the devil's attempts to tear the couple apart is a key to winning in the game of life.
Overall, "No Pain" is a message of hope and perseverance, urging listeners to keep striving for better things even when the road ahead seems rough.

Today I am preparing for my auntie's home going. I'm her next of kin. I'm all she had at the end of her life.
My aunt suffered bad relationships, bad men. She loved them and stayed with them until God said otherwise.
To this day I'll never understand the joy a man gets out of mistreating a woman.
I don't understand being conditioned to being abuse either. But I definitely understand I don't love you anymore because you just hit me. I'm about to cut and shoot and thump my way up out of here.
I was just riding through town working toward preparing for my auntie's home going and the song crossed my mind. Father God rest your soul Auntie. 😢😢😢

As a male, black, 20-something, I remember listening to this song while working with my dad on the weekends. I know the song talks about pain in a relationship but I always applied it to other portions of my life too. There may be let downs, disappointments, and I may mess up, but all of those things work out to strengthen and improve us. We can’t grow without growing pains.

This song is a metaphor in life not just a man but in life if you want something more your going to go through something if it’s easy then it’s not worth it. A man is just one of many things that you will experience heartache from no matter the color of your skin. You gotta push through the pressure and pressure makes diamonds. Love this song it’s a childhood favorite ❤️ RIH Betty Wright
