Dakota
Between You & Me Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw your boyfriend yesterday
He looked at me with the same face
Feels like I'm 17 again
I guess not much has even changed
Since we were back in highschool, talking everyday
Does he still tell you""I'll be sorry"" if I ever even look your way?

Hey Dakota you can piss right off
You'll keep your hands to yourself
And remove my name from your mouth
Hey Dakota why are you so scared?
'Cause we both know that you hate me
So why don't you tell someone who cares?

How do you stand back and take it?
The cheating, lies and the abuse
Like a punching bag, you wont fight back
Tell me what's your best excuse
""Wipe those tears away"" so many times I told her
But I'm here to hold your hand while you're crying on my shoulder
I've lost all faith in this, because he's never changing
I tried to tell you girl, but you never listened

Hey Dakota you can piss right off
You'll keep your hands to yourself
And remove my name from your mouth
Hey Dakota why are you so scared?
'Cause we both know that you hate me
So why don't you tell someone who cares?

You'd be better off on your own, I think you know
You'd be better off on your own (I'll say it again…)

Hey Dakota you can piss right off
You'll keep your hands to yourself
And remove my name from your mouth
Hey Dakota why are you so scared?
'Cause we both know that you hate me
So why don't you tell someone who cares?

You'd be better off on your own
But if you ever need I'll always be here

Overall Meaning

The song "Dakota" by Australian pop punk band Between You & Me is about a toxic relationship where one partner is being emotionally and possibly physically abused by the other. The song begins with the singer running into the girlfriend's boyfriend, who still hates the singer after all these years. The lyrics take a turn towards the end, as the singer tries to convince the girlfriend to leave her abusive partner, telling her they would be better off alone. The chorus, which is repeated several times, is a direct message to the girlfriend's ex, saying that he needs to keep her name out of his mouth and out of his life.

The song Dakota was written by the lead singer and guitarist of the band, Jake Wilson, who revealed that the song was actually about one of his close female friends who was in an abusive relationship. Wilson admits that he struggled with feelings of guilt for not being able to get his friend out of the relationship and the sense of betrayal he had for knowing about the abuse and still not being able to do anything about it. This song is his way of coming to terms with those emotions and encouraging other people in similar situations to get out of their abusive relationships.

Passed out with my headphones in my ears and woke up to this song. Perfect song to cheer you up after a failed date and a hangover!

@Bazelinez

It's disgusting how good this song is. They're far too young to know this is what the peak of pop punk sounded like. Keep it up 👏

@NintenJoe09

This is the reason why Hopeless Records will always have the best chance to bring punk pop back. Every band they sign is incredible!! Kudos to Hopeless!!!
