The Primer
Between the Buried and Me Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Put your guns in my hands
In the hands of the young
Let's kill
Let's die
We're all equal tonight
Prescribe me:
I don't want to know what I see
Please don't let me cope alone
Joystick revolution move me
It's all a dream
Redneck lord you still soothe me
Behind your black tie revolution
This is just a party
Prescribe me:
Become the whore
Please drug the young
Follow the gods
For sex and greed bring the smiles
The rich, sexy smiles
The smiles that blow the minds of every goddamn male pig out there
We all just want to fuck
What is love, the idea of love
Corpse play
Tradition marriage:
We don't have to take this serious
Have you seen the cities
Have you seen the images
We have to be you
2005 welcome to perfection
Prescribe me, indulge me
You have won
The Primer, by progressive metalcore band Between the Buried and Me, is a commentary on the darker aspects of society, including power, sex, and violence. The lyrics, "Prescribe me: Corrupt me / Put your guns in my hands / In the hands of the young / Let's kill / Let's die / We're all equal tonight" express the desire to be corrupted by those in power, including the prescribing of drugs and the encouragement of violence. The line, "We're all equal tonight," implies that in death, all social hierarchies are erased.
The next verse expresses the desire to escape reality through video games and other means of entertainment, "Joystick revolution move me / It's all a dream / Redneck lord you still soothe me / Behind your black tie revolution / This is just a party." The reference to a "redneck lord" and a "black tie revolution" suggests that those in power come from all walks of life and use various tactics to maintain their control.
The final verse discusses the commodification of sex and the rejection of traditional values, "Become the whore / Please drug the young / Follow the gods / For sex and greed bring the smiles / The rich, sexy smiles / The smiles that blow the minds of every goddamn male pig out there / We all just want to fuck / What is love, the idea of love / Corpse play." The lyrics suggest that society has become obsessed with sex and materialism, and traditional values such as marriage are being rejected.
Overall, The Primer is a scathing critique of society's darker aspects, and the lyrics express a desire to escape reality and join those in power, no matter how corrupt they may be.
