The three were subsequently joined by Steve LaFolette (bass & vocals), Pat Noel (keyboards & guitar), Steve St. Cin (drums), and Ana Pitchon, who toured as Beulah in 1998, before recording When Your Heartstrings Break. Bill Evans (keyboards) then joined the band to play live. Steve St. Cin left the band to be replaced by Danny Sullivan, before The Coast is Never Clear was released in 2000. Bill Evans and Steve LaFolette then left, to be replaced by Pat Abernathy and Eli Crews respectively. Beulah went on to record 2003's Yoko, then toured North America and Europe before a goodbye show on August 5th 2004, in New York.
A DVD, A Good Band is Easy to Kill was released in 2005 and features documentary footage from Beulah's 2003 tour.

He carries me home on his beautiful horse
And where she waits, I will ride ride ride
Come on stranger, just sing me a song
And if it's sad, I'll sing along-long-long,
I told you I knew every word
Gonna write my name in the sand
I'm gonna lay this body down
And watch the waves roll in
When the city spreads out
Just like a cut vein
Everybody drowns, sad and lonely
Well everybody drowns, sad and lonely
Well everybody drowns, sad and lonely alright
Sweet sweet dreams, and color and sound
Highways in the faraway to be found
I saw gold mines, in the sky sky sky
They were clouds just waiting to cry
And with the wind
I'm dancing drift drift drift
In the shapes of the place that I miss
And when I get to California
Gonna write my name in the sand
I'm gonna lay this body down
And watch the waves roll in
I'm gonna rest this weary head
On someone who I think will care
But when the stars in the sky start fallin'
I think you'll understand
That the city spreads out
Just like a cut vein
Everybody drowns, sad and lonely
Well everybody drowns, sad and lonely
Well everybody drowns, sad and lonely alright
Yeah I'm waiting
For something to give
Well I'm waiting
I hope it's not me
Yeah I'm waiting
For something to give
Yeah I'm waiting
The lyrics of Beulah's song Gene Autry depict a journey of hope, despair, and longing for a better life. The singer of the song is on a mission to reach California, where she plans to start a new chapter of her life. She admires Gene Autry, a famous singer and actor, and dreams of riding with him through the golden hills of California. The song emphasizes a melancholy undertone as the singer battles through difficult times to reach her goal.
The song goes on to describe moments of revelation as the singer observes the beauty of the world around her. She sees gold mines in the sky, which are nothing but clouds waiting to shed tears. She dances with the wind and reminisces about the places she misses. The lyrics reveal a sense of yearning for a place to belong, someone to care for, and a sense of purpose.
The song's message is both hopeful and bleak. It seems to suggest that no matter how hard one tries, everyone will eventually end up sad and lonely. The overarching metaphor of the city spreading out like a cut vein is compelling, and it gives a sense of finality that is hard to escape.
