freckles
Beverley Mahood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to care so much
About what others think about
Almost didn't have a thought of my own
The slightest remark
Would make me embark
On the journey of self doubt
But that was a while ago
This girl has got stronger
If I knew then what I know now
I would have told myself don't worry any longer
Its okay

Cuz a face without freckles is like a sky without stars
Why waste a second not loving who you are
Those little imperfections make you beautiful, lovable, valuable,
They show your personality inside your heart
Reflecting who you are

Who you are
Who you are
Who you are

I wondered if I could
Trade my body with somebody else in magazines
With the whole world full at my feet
I phantom worthy and would blame
My failures on the ugliness I could see
When the mirror looked at me
Sometimes I feel like the little girl who
Doesn't belong in her own world
But im getting better
And im reminding myself

Cuz a face without freckles is a sky without stars
Why waste a second not loving who you are
Those little imperfections make you beautiful, lovable, valuable,
They show your personality inside your heart
Reflecting who you are

Reflecting who you are
Reflecting who you are
Hmmm
Whoooooo whoa hmmmm oooooo

Cuz a face without freckles is a sky without stars
Why waste a second not loving who you are
Those little imperfections make you beautiful,
Lovable, valuable,

They show your personality inside your heart
Reflecting who you are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beverley Mahood's song Freckles speaks to the journey of self-acceptance and self-love. In the beginning, the singer of the song struggled with caring too much about what others thought of her, to the point where she lost a sense of her own identity. Even the slightest remark could trigger feelings of self-doubt, and she would embark on a journey of insecurity. However, with time, the singer has grown stronger and learned to love herself for who she is. The imperfections that she once saw as flaws are now embraced as a part of her unique personality, they are what make her beautiful, lovable, and valuable. She encourages others to do the same and not waste a second not loving themselves.

The song's central theme of self-love and acceptance can resonate with individuals who struggle with issues of self-doubt and self-esteem. It highlights the importance of acknowledging and embracing one's individuality and unique qualities. The line "Those little imperfections make you beautiful, lovable, valuable" suggests that even the little things that we may see as imperfections are what make us unique and loveable. The song also addresses the impact of societal standards of beauty on self-esteem, as the singer once believed that she had to look a certain way to be worthy.

Well, I'm one of, umm... several million guys who LOVE freckles! Thanks Beverley, for writing a song for us. I've been in love with freckles since I was probably 5 years old. I'm 45 now and I married a girl with them. We (certain men) absolutely LOVE them! We're head-over-heels infatuated with them!

I think with a song like this it doesn't matter who is "better". They sing differently and reach different crowds. This is a song that EVERYONE needs to hear, so by both of them doing it, that's more people that get the message. My god, it's supposed to be a feel good song and all you people are doing is tearing each other down. Pathetic and sad!
