Ghost
Beyoncé Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I've been drifting off on knowledge
Cat-calls on cat-walks, man these women getting solemn
I could sing a song for a Solomon or Salamander
We took a flight at midnight and now my mind can't help but wander
How come?
Spoon-fed pluralized eyes to find the beaches in the forest
When I'm looking off the edge, I preach my gut it can't help but ignore it
I'm climbing up the walls cause all the shit I hear is boring
All the shit I do is boring
All these record labels boring
I don't trust these record labels I'm torn
All these people on the planet
Working 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
The 9 to 5, just to stay alive
All the people on the planet
Working 9 to 5 just to stay alive
How come?

What goes up, ghost around
Goes around around around around
What goes up, ghost around
Ghost around around around around

Soul not for sale
Probably won't make no money off this, oh well

Reap what you sow
Perfection is so

Overall Meaning

unattainable, you know
But we still try
We still try
We’re still climbers
And we’re still soldiers
We’re still fighting
And we’re still marching
On and on and on and on and on

The lyrics to Beyoncé's "Ghost / Haunted“ talks about the disillusionment with the world around oneself. She sings about how everyone is just trying to survive, working 9 to 5 to stay alive, while she's drifting off on knowledge. The line “Spoon-fed pluralized eyes to find the beaches in the forest” could mean that everyone is blindly following what society tells them to do, like trying to find a beach in the forest. She then talks about how bored she is with the music industry, and how she doesn't trust record labels. This might be connected to how hard it is to stay authentic within the music industry when there's so much pressure to conform to what's currently popular.

The chorus speaks to the cyclical nature of life - what goes up, must come down. "Ghost around" could be a reference to how people's experiences and lives continue to haunt them even after they've moved on from them. The line "Soul not for sale" illustrates how she's not willing to compromise her values for money, and although she may not make money from this song, she's still going to put her heart and soul into it. In the final stanza, Beyoncé acknowledges that perfection is unattainable, but that we should still strive for it. "Climbers" and "soldiers" refer to those who keep pushing forward despite the obstacles in their way.

"I don't trust these record labels, I'm torn" ... "People working 9-5 just stay alive, how come?"..."Soul not for sale"...there's a lot of pain being poured out in this song, ending with "probably won't make no money off this, oh well". It's easy to cast Beyonce as 'illuminati', but you can hear in this song/poetry she's questioning something pretty deep & profound within herself and the current state of the world. It's beautiful.

....Seems to be a lot of hate for this album (I admit, I was on the hate wagon when it first came out), but actually as a whole piece, a concept and an artform, it is incredible - beyond it's years in fact (which is probably why many don't really get it right now). If you listen to it with your heart, she has a lot to say. Not only in the words, but the instrumentation and the use of samples such as the TED Talk on feminism by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She has a platform to speak out and it's awesome to see how she's using it in this album.

Yeah obviously there's the party, shallow type tracks like 711 and whatnot (still sick), but mixed with the depths of "Haunted", "Heaven" etc it's hard not to respect what Beyonce has successfully achieved in her career thus far; the ability to cover all aspects of the human psyche in her music; dark and light, love and hate, shallow & deep, yin yang - she gives us all of it. To brand everything she creates with a 'darker' vibe as 'illuminati' is ignorant - we ALL contain these darker truths within us...the 'demonic' things we talk of and hate on in her videos are meant to be representative of the demons within us all: God & The Devil are metaphors for the balance between dark & light energy which lives within each of us. If you research (properly with books, not internet BS) in to the 'Illuminati' you understand there's a lot more to it than just some dudes worshipping 'satan' - that's a very surface, childlike way to look at it.

Aaaaaanyway........

Just some food for thoughts.
I for one can't stop listening to this album.
WORD x
