Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé began performing in local competitions at age 7, eventually forming the group Girl's Tyme in 1990 with help from her parents. Girl's Tyme became Destiny's Child in 1997.
During the hiatus of Destiny's Child in 2003, Beyoncé released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, which became one of the most successful albums of that year, and signaled her viability as a solo artist. The disbanding of Destiny's Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success: her sophomore solo album B'Day, released in 2006, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. Her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, was released in November 2008, and in 2009 she received 10 Grammy Awards nominations. On January 31, 2010, she won 6 Grammy Awards, breaking the record for most Grammy awards won by a female artist in one night; she previously held the record of five awards with 5 other artists. Following a career hiatus, Beyoncé released her fourth studio album entitled "4" on June 24, 2011, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.

And life was my teacher
I wanted the steppers
I needed the vocalists
I wanted different characters, I didn't want us all doing the same thing
And the amount of swag is just limitless

It's just not right, it's just so much damn swag
In Beyoncé's song "So Much Damn Swag," she reflects on her upbringing in eastern Texas and her aspirations of attending a Historically Black College or University (H.B.C.U.). She mentions visiting Prairie View and rehearsing at T.S.U. in 3rd Ward, highlighting her connection to these institutions. However, instead of attending a traditional college, Beyoncé considers Destiny's Child, the group she was a part of, as her college experience. The experiences they had while traveling the world served as their education, with life being their teacher.
Beyoncé's desire for diversity and uniqueness becomes evident in her desire for a black orchestra, steppers, and vocalists with different characters. She emphasizes that she didn't want everyone in the group to be doing the same thing, wanting to create a dynamic and varied ensemble. This sentiment is further emphasized when she mentions the limitless amount of swag these young people possess. She appreciates their talent, skills, and creativity, specifically highlighting their ability to showcase their bodies, play music, execute drumrolls, style their hair, and maintain fit physiques.
The final line of the lyrics "It's just not right, it's just so much damn swag" expresses Beyoncé's admiration and awe for the level of confidence and talent displayed by these young individuals. She is amazed by their abilities and finds it incredible.
