Daddy Lessons
Beyonce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yee-haw (ooh)
Texas, Texas (ooh)
Texas

Came into this world
Daddy's little girl
And daddy made a soldier out of me (ooh)
Daddy made me dance
And daddy held my hand (ooh)
And daddy liked his whisky with his tea
And we rode motorcycles
Blackjack, classic vinyl
Tough girl is what I had to be

He said, "take care of your mother
Watch out for your sister"
Oh, and that's when he gave to me

With his gun and his head held high
He told me not to cry
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot
With his right hand on his rifle
He swore it on the bible
My daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot
He held me in his arms
And he taught me to be strong
He told me when he's gone
Here's what you do
When trouble comes in town
And men like me come around
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot

(Ooh, ooh)
(Yee-haw)

Daddy made me fight
It wasn't always right
But he said, girl, it's your second amendment (ooh)
He always played it cool
But daddy was no fool
And right before he died, he said, "remember"

He said, "take care of your mother
Watch out for your sister"
That's when daddy looked at me

With his gun, with his head held high
He told me not to cry
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot
With his right hand on his rifle
He swore it on the bible
My daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot (yee-haw)
'Cause he held me in his arms
And he taught me to be strong
And he told me when he's gone
Here's what you do
When trouble comes to town
And men like me come around
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot

(Ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, yee-haw)

My daddy warned me about men like you
He said, "baby girl, he's playing you
He's playing you"
My daddy warned me about men like you
He said, "baby girl, he's playing you
He's playing you" (ooh)
'Cause when trouble comes in town
And men like me come around
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot (yee-haw)
'Cause when trouble comes to town
And men like me come around
Oh, my daddy said shoot
Oh, my daddy said shoot

(Good job, Bey)

Overall Meaning

The song "Daddy Lessons" by Beyonce is a tribute to the strength, guidance, and protection of her father. The song is a country-inspired tune that serves as an ode to the lessons her father taught her as a young girl. The lyrics sing of the bond between a father and daughter and how he trained her to handle the tough realities of the world.

The opening verse sets the scene by highlighting the bond between the singer and her father. She sings that her father raised her to be a strong and resilient woman. He taught her to ride motorcycles, listen to classic vinyl, and "take care of your mother, watch out for your sister". The song's chorus features the repeating lines "oh, my daddy said shoot" sung over a southern twang and guitar riff. This signifies how the father trained her daughter to be ready for anything, even danger, by teaching her how to shoot a gun.

The final verse is a warning from her father about men who would try and take advantage of her. He warned her to be cautious and not be fooled by their charm, telling her "baby girl, he's playing you". The last chorus features an additional instrumental break and vocal ad-libs from Beyonce, celebrating her father's teachings and his presence in her life.

This is one of my favorite songs from her! ❤️ But I don’t know why I’m seeing comments from people who clearly have not listened to her massive musical repertoire about finally getting a song not containing profanity or sexual gestures. Like Huh?

She has plenty of songs that are popular that is not about any of the topics mentioned. Here’s songs worth listening to from just her last five albums:

The Gift- Lion King Album- Basically the entire album but specific’s (Brown Skin Girl, Power, Spirit, Bigger, Other-side)

Everything is Love by the Carter’s Album- (Summertime, Lovehappy)

Lemonade Album- Most of the album: (Daddy Lessons, Freedom, Love Drought, Pray You Catch me, Sandcastles)

Beyoncé Album- (Pretty Hurts, Blue, Heaven, XO)

4 Album- Basically most of the album- (Love on Top, End of Time, Start Over, I Was Here)

I’m seeing a lot of people just discovering Beyoncé’s musicianship in the last 5 or so years and have listened to less than 5-10 songs by her and swear they can categorize her music just by that. No. She’s been in the industry for 20+ years!

When Beyoncé went country, she took the genre back to its Southern African American roots! It sounds amazing!

I think Muddy Waters is the most iconic blues singer who originated country blues.
