Sandcastles
Beyonce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We built sand castles that washed away
I made you cry when I walked away
Oh, and although I promised that I couldn't stay, baby
Every promise don't work out that way, oh, babe
Every promise don't work out that way

Dishes smashed on my counter from our last encounter
Pictures snatched out the frame
Bitch, I scratched out your name and your face
What is it about you that I can't erase, baby?
When every promise don't work out that way, no, no, babe
When every promise don't work out that way

And your heart is broken 'cause I walked away
Show me your scars and I won't walk away
Oh, and I know I promised that I couldn't stay, baby

Every promise don't work out that way, no, no, no, no, no
Every promise don't work out that way

Overall Meaning

In Beyoncé's song Sandcastles, she describes the crumbling of a relationship she was once in with someone. She uses the metaphor of sandcastles to show that despite the initial excitement and beauty of the relationship, it was ultimately fleeting and easily washed away, leaving both of them hurt and broken. She admits fault in the relationship by acknowledging that she made her partner cry when she walked away, despite having promised to stay. She follows this by repeating the phrase, "Every promise don't work out that way," which communicates her understanding that things often don't end up going as planned, even when people make well-meaning promises.

The second verse of the song delves deeper into the pain and anger felt by both parties after the relationship ended. Beyoncé describes the physical remnants of their last encounter, such as dishes smashed on the counter and pictures with her partner's name and face scratched out. She then asks the question, "What is it about you that I can't erase?" which shows that even though things ended badly, her feelings for this person are still present and tangible. She ends the verse by repeating the refrain about promises not always working out, emphasizing the fact that despite everyone's best efforts, relationships can still fall apart.

The final verse changes in tone and becomes more empathetic. Beyoncé acknowledges the pain she has caused by walking away from the relationship, and offers to stay and help mend the broken heart. She asks to see the "scars" left behind by the relationship, indicating that she wants to understand and heal her partner's pain. However, she also recognizes that despite her desire to stay and help, promises may not always work out, leaving both parties hurt and with scars.

Overall, Sandcastles portrays the complicated nature of relationships with honesty and vulnerability. Beyoncé shows that even when love is fleeting and imperfect, there is still beauty and emotion within the experience.

baptize me
now the reconciliation is possible
if we are gonna heal let it be glorious
one thousand girl’s raise there arms
do you remember being born
are you thankful for the hips the cracked
the deep velvet of your mother and her mother and her mother
there is a curse that will be broken

The voice crack is pure emotion and that’s a real artist.

Maria Gonzalez Thank You! I was like: it isn’t funny, it is strategic to bring emphasis to your mastery of your own voice. When she makes her voice crack she is going from her chest voice to her head voice, vice-versa. I just love how well she sings. She inspires me to be better, not only by how spectacular both her singing and talking/storytelling voice is, but how her story is amazing and she is such a strong woman. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter deserves all of the good things in her life and I wish her many more years and nothing but love and prosperity in her future.
