Beyond Surface is a young band from Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, chosen by Metal Hammer magazine as the German winner of the "Young Metal Gods 2003" band contest. This victory made it possible for them to record their debut album professionally and to release it through the well-known metal/rock label Noise Records. The result, "Destination's End", included catchy melodies and hooklines which sparked at first attempt and animated to sing along. Moreover, the band proved with a solid guitar work including some great riffs and solos, nice keyboard elements and befittingly deep and melancholic vocals of singer and frontman Gerrit, influenced by bands such as HIM, Paradise Lost, Sentenced and End Of Green, that they didn't win the title "Young Metal Gods" for nothing. Many gothic fans still consider this album an "insider tip" today, and the numerous good reviews affirmed the band's efforts.
After having played a few concerts in the near area of their hometown and a headliner show at the Hungarian Gothica festival, the band drew back again whereas they also had to cope with line-up problems. At the end of 2004/beginning of 2005, bassist Max, keyboardist Sascha and guitarist Marten quit the band and left a big hiatus in the band that was now a trio consisting of vocalist Gerrit, guitarist Thorsten und drummer Loeffel. But instead of just throwing in the towel and giving up, the band continued fighting and finally found a worthy replacement for bassist Max - Thomas. The position of Keyboardist Sascha remained unreplaced and Gerrit, who himself had been a lead guitarist for years, took over the position of Marten.
Back together in a tight line-up, they began writing new songs and it became clear at first push that the band would leave the gothic direction and attempt a new beginning with a new and fresh sound. They started writing new material that distinguished itself through a more modern and pushing rock sound with a lot of killer riffs, drum attacks and clear-sounding, still very catchy hooklines which were all completely different from the gothic sound of their debut album. With their new song, the ballad-like "Shine On", they managed to beat more than 100 competitors in the "re:spect" contest that was built up by the famous German rock singer Marius Mueller-Westernhagen. As a reward, they were given the chance to be the opener at the final concert of Marius Mueller Westernhagen's last tour. Having received that chance, they were not only able to play in front of their biggest audience ever (about 40.000 people) but they also gained a lot of new fans. Other concerts in their area und the positive reactions of the fans encouraged the band to keep their new sound, and they now keenly focused on producing a demo EP called "Confusion Reigns" that is almost finished at the time being. There are also some concert dates due this summer where the four-piece will once more give proof of their great live qualities.

Trying to walk it without you
Weren't you the one who set me free?
Holding the silence in my arms
Keeping the sadness in my heart
In this far landscape I see no harm
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
Falling into the black unknown
Falling into this life so cold
Where there's no more time for dying for
Breaking the circles I've been through
I see the places we've been to
And remember all things with a smile
But it got so hollow
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
That's from the mountain
Into the sea
That's just the distance
Between you and me
From the mountain
You and me
The lyrics of Beyond Surface's song "From the Mountain" depict a person's attempt to come to terms with their relationship with someone who set them free. The song talks about how the singer is struggling to find a way to bridge the emotional distance between them and the person they are trying to connect with. They are holding the silence and sadness in their arms and heart, respectively, but they see no harm in this far landscape. The opening lines express the singer's intention to find a way to connect with the person despite their physical absence. However, they also accept that they must try to walk the path without their loved one.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become darker and more melancholic. The singer speaks of falling into the black unknown in this life so cold, where there is no more time to die for. They break the circles they have been through and remember all the good times with a smile. However, these memories and experiences have become hollow due to the distance between them and their loved one. The chorus repeats the phrase "That's from the mountain into the sea, that's just the distance between you and me" where the metaphor of the distance between two extremes represents the emotional distance between two individuals who are no longer in the same place.
Overall, the lyrics of "From the Mountain" are introspective and emotive, showing the singer's struggle to reconnect with someone they have lost. Despite the sadness, there is an acceptance that this distance might not be bridged, and the person must come to terms with it. The metaphorical imagery of mountains and seas highlights the vastness of emotion and distance between people.

Trying to find a way to you
Attempting to locate a path towards you
Trying to walk it without you
Attempting to traverse the path without your accompaniment
Weren't you the one who set me free?
Didn't you liberate me?
Holding the silence in my arms
Embracing the stillness within me
Keeping the sadness in my heart
Retaining the sorrow emotionally present within me
In this far landscape I see no harm
I do not perceive any danger in this distant environment
That's from the mountain
That's the space that separates us
Into the sea
Extending until reaching the ocean
That's just the distance
It is solely the expanse between us
Between you and me
Creating distance from oneself to another
Falling into the black unknown
Tumbling into obscurity
Falling into this life so cold
Growing weaker in this cold existence
Where there's no more time for dying for
Where there is no more opportunity to suffer
Breaking the circles I've been through
Disrupting the repetitive patterns I have undergone
I see the places we've been to
I discern the locations we visited
And remember all things with a smile
And recall everything with joy
But it got so hollow
But it became so empty
From the mountain
Separated by a great distance
You and me
The two of us
