Lovers' Carvings
Bibio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lovers' names, carved in walls
Overlap, start to merge
Some of them underneath
Maybe they appear
In graveyards
Maybe they fade away
Weathered and overgrown
Time has told
Meaningful hidden words
Suddenly appear, from the murk
Maybe they're telling us
That the end
Never was
Never will
The words have gone

But the meaning will never disappear
From the wall

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Bibio's song Lovers' Carvings evokes the imagery of teenage love and vandalism with young couples carving their names in walls as a symbol of their love. However, the lyrics go further to suggest that these lovers' names eventually overlap and merge, hinting at the possibility that love can be fleeting and move on. The suggestion of some of the names being underneath implies that perhaps some loves are more genuine and lasting than others. The cynicism in this verse fades in the following lines, as the singer considers the possibility of lovers carving their names in graveyards, that love can survive even in the face of mortality. The image shifts to one of disrepair and neglect, as some of these loves may fade over time, but the meaning remains long after.

The chorus is an uplifting declaration that the meaning behind these lovers' carvings remains long after the words have faded. The idea is that love never truly dies, and the impact of those who were once in love can be felt long after they are gone. The final verse seems to suggest that hidden meanings can be discovered in life, as meaningful words can appear from the murk, guiding us to a greater understanding of the world. It is a hopeful reminder that even in the face of decay and neglect, the essence of love is eternal and will always remain.

Over time, the names on the wall start to overlap and blend together, which could represent the intertwining of the two people's lives and their mutual affection for each other.

Despite the fading of the physical carvings, the love that they symbolize can still hold deep meaning and significance for those who remember it.

I discovered this song in a very dark period of my life. I was tired, sick, wanting to die from the pain I was in. So depressed. But every day I had to walk through a park on the way to my apartment...and I would play this as I passed through it. It always cheered me up.

Today I am healthy and enjoying life. And still listening....
