Space Man
Bif Naked Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see your face on the television, almost everyday
In magazines and on the big screen
Close yet far away
I wonder why you choose those others
And you never come to call on me
When I'm the one who's waiting for you
I really need you-please pick me!

Spaceman, oh spaceman!
Come rescue me from this!
Calling all aliens!
Come rescue me!

Remember that night at my window
When I waved at you?
I must have been only five, or so,
But I never forgot you.
I wonder why you choose those others
And you never come to call on me
When I'm the one who's waiting for you
I really need you-please pick me!

Spaceman, oh spaceman!
Come rescue me from this!
Calling all aliens!
Come rescue me!

Overall Meaning

In Bif Naked's song Space Man, the singer addresses an extraterrestrial being whom she has been longing for. The first verse establishes the ubiquity of the spaceman in the media, on screens and magazines, creating a strong sense of familiarity even though they are not physically present. The second verse has a contemplative tone, as the woman remembers a long-ago moment when she had made contact with the spaceman, who then left without any explanation. She confesses that she doesn't understand why the spaceman chooses others over her, and pleads for him to choose her instead.

The chorus "Spaceman, oh spaceman! Come rescue me from this! Calling all aliens! Come rescue me!" creates an image of someone desperately calling out to a non-responsive entity, further emphasizing the theme of unrequited love. The repetition of the phrase "rescue me" implies that the singer feels trapped in her longing and needs a force outside of her own control to intervene and make things happen.

The song can be interpreted as a metaphor for unrequited love, where the spaceman represents an unattainable love interest that the singer can't let go of. It may also speak to a larger feeling of being alone, isolated, and misunderstood, a sentiment that many people can relate to.

I love this song- it’s one of my favourites from the best decade of my life, because it was such a fun time.
That said, speaking as an engineer this song really needs to be remastered because Bif‘s vocals are buried behind the instrumental tracks.
I hope someone will manage to do this, and soon- because I’m getting old, lol.
