Somebody I never met
But in a way I know
Didn't think that you could get
So much from a picture show
Man dies first reel
People ask what's the deal?
This ain't how it's supposed to be
Don't like no aborigine

Took a trip in Powis Square
Pop star dyed his hair
No fans to scream and shout
When mobsters came to flush him out
Gangland slaying underground
New identity must be found
On the left bank for a while
Insanity Bohemian style

Ritual ideas relativety
Only buildings no people prophecy
Time slide place to hide nudge reality
Foresight minds wide magic imagery, oh oh

Met a dwarf that was no good
Dressed like little Red Riding Hood
Bad habit taking life
A calling card a six inch knife
Ran off really fast
Mumbled something 'bout the past
Best sex I've ever seen
As if each moment was the last
Drops of blood color slide
Funeral for his bride
But it's him who's really dead
Gets to take the funeral ride

Ritual ideas relativity
Only buildings no people prophecy
Time slide place to hide nudge reality
Foresight minds wide magic imagery, oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh

Space guy fell from the sky
Scratched my head and wondered why
Time slide into time
Across international dateline
Scientist eats bubblegum
Hall of fame baseball
Senators a Hoodlum
Big chiefs in the hall

Ritual ideas relativity
Only buildings no people prophecy
Time slide place to hide nudge reality
Foresight minds wide magic imagery, oh oh

Stray thoughts fear to tread
Placed upon the screen instead
She's my flame too hot to hold
Had to settle for her cold

Blood lust, Greek god, gold discovery
Gone bust, tight wad, slow recovery
Axe job, flame thrower, iron bar and gun
Betting shop, New owner, A walk in the sun

Ritual ideas relativity
Only buildings no people prophecy

Overall Meaning

The song E=MC2 by Big Audio Dynamite is a complex and enigmatic piece of music that draws from various cultural and historical references to create a psychedelic and surreal experience for the listener. The lyrics are arranged in a series of vignettes that evoke ideas related to time, space, history, identity, and fantasy. The song appears to be a collage of images and impressions that overlap and interconnect in unexpected ways, creating a sense of dislocation and disorientation that mirrors the fragmentation of modern life.

The verses of the song portray a series of characters and situations that are loosely connected but share a common sense of absurdity and irreverence. For example, in the first verse, the singer refers to a man who dies in the first reel of a picture show, prompting people to question what's the deal, as this is not how it's supposed to be. The line "Don't like no aborigine" suggests a racist and narrow-minded attitude that contrasts with the immediacy and openness of the previous lines. The middle section of the song presents a series of images related to performance, disguise, and violence, including a pop star dying his hair, a dwarf dressed like Little Red Riding Hood, a bad habit of taking life, and a funeral for a bride. These images are portrayed in a detached and playful manner that underlines their artificiality and theatricality. Finally, the song concludes with a series of references to science fiction, mythology, folklore, and popular culture that offer a kaleidoscopic view of the world as a place of constant transformation and possibility.

Overall, the lyrics of E=MC2 suggest a skepticism towards conventional modes of representation and narration, and a preference for collage, pastiche, and irony as alternative forms of expression. The song uses a mix of literary, cinematic, and musical references to create a dense and layered texture that invites multiple interpretations and resonances. By exploring themes such as time, space, identity, and fantasy, the lyrics of E=MC2 suggest a desire to break free from the constraints of reality and explore new horizons of creativity and imagination.

@BNCA70

I used to listen to this on cassette on my first walkman in the summer of 86 when I was 16. My Dad died that summer while it was still in the charts, he was only 55. I often wonder if he ever heard this on the radio while driving around in his works van before he got ill. I hope we liked the same music, I reckon we did. Love you Dad.

@thra5herxb12s

I'm 56 now, my Dad died 3 months ago. Music was his life and I will miss him forever. Love you Dad.

My husband died last year and we loved this album, we took our first born daughter and saw them in concert in the early 90's. And partied with Mick and Johnny Lydon from PIL, a awesome memory that I hold dear.

@zyxvwu

I lost my mom in 85', I was 16, and I loved (still do) this song...Sigh...

@CoatedIngoo

Dad also died in 86 @65 just before I turned 16. Liked his jazz, old rock, country, big band... Lawrence Welk Show ftw! He was also very good about the music I listened to and would dance around while MTV played whatever (like it used to do!) xD Good memories. <3 Dad <3
